disease is the condition in which the system is left after a course of radical

Dallas May 7.— Full county and
state tickets will be put out this year
by the prohibition party. This was
determined at a meeting of the state
executive committee here this after-
noon. Steps to bring about the nom-
inations and the organisation of an
active campaign will be taken at once.
To nominate state officers a state con-
vention will be held at Dallas on Au-
gust 13, as provided by the election
law. A full state ticket will be placed
in ths field. There was a discussion
of the Terrell election law and several
state offices.
It was declared that the state com-
mittee could take no action regarding
the campaign in Dallas county other
than to approve of the idea. Conse-
quently there will be issued within a
few* days a call for a mass convention
for the selection of an executive com-
mittee. It is regarded as a certainty
that a full county ticket will be put
out here.

that such anecdtes are beginning to

"centras" language is coming into
everyday use.
Fou will notice that no allowance fs
made in the telephone vocabulary for
argument and discussion. The operator
who answers calls, and makes connec-
tions is not alloved to say anything
outside of the prescribed phrases. If
you find it necessary to go beyond that
you should ask for "Information,” or
the chief operator, or the manager.
The switchboard girl has had in the
past to put up with any amount of
insolence and even brutality from the
elA83 of, people who, knowing she could

The telephone service, like every-
thing else, is most useful and eco-
nomical when it i employed as those
who make It Intend it shall be em-
ployed. The shorthand telephone lan-
guage is simply one of the inventions
of the Bell engineers for sving time,
wrought out wlth as much care find
patience, representing as many modi-
fications and improvements In jits way
as the highly perfected mechanical
plant which it has taken thirty years
of time and millions of dollars to .bring
to its present standard.
Boston, May 1.—In the twentieth
century craze for saving time the
shrowd business man is adopting for
his purposes telephonic the shorthand
language evised by the engineers of
the Bell systelu for the use of its
operators, a set of phrases at once
brief and to the point, civil and easily
understood. No doubt this was a sec-
ondary purpose of the engineers, for It
is as important to quick and satisfac-
tory service that the telephono user
shall not waste words ns that the girl
at the switchboard shall save them.
The greatest difficulty the telephone
user has in ) talking "Central’s” lan-
guage as succeasfuliy as "Central” talks
it is that the quality of voice, the pre-
cise tone, and just the right Ifection,
are so important. In selecting opera-

tors the Bell companies lay special
stress on the voice: It must be clear,
flexible and agreeable. In training
them. special attention is given the
matter of inflection, which in ‘Cen-
tral’s" shorthand system of talking
may make all the difference between
civility and seeming rudeness.
A recent order about instructing girls
for the long distance service pointed
out that the operator is in the same
position toward the telephone patron
as the clerk in a store is to the cus-
tomer buying goods. Her task is the
more difficult because she is not ac-
tually dealing face to face, but must
always make ainstnking civility ap-
parent. “the tone of her voice indicat-
ing this clearly, as well as Interest in
the customer’s service, since the voice
is the only medium between the opera-
tor and the customer.” said the in-
structions. "Speclal aftention should
be given this point to insure a pleas-
ing, courteous and tactful address. This
feature of telephone service can not be

ployes, particularly as a part If the
fundamental training of students.”
"Central” goes right to the point by
asking "Number?’ when he gets your
signal—an answer to your call and at
the same time an inqufry as to your
needs. You have noticed, of equrse,
how this one little word is made to in-
clude both the responsible and the in-
quiry simply by the way it is pro-
nounced. It is the same with all the
other stock phrases: "Line busy,”
"They don’t answer,” "Did you get
them?” "I’ll connect you with Informa-

The girl who answers subscribers*
calls at the •switchboard is one of the
busiest people in town. That you may
have the .quickest possible communica-
tion, apparatus has been devised to
bring into each central office the largest
number of lines that can be handled
there efficiently, and the number of
lines assigned to each operator is care-
fully considered to see that, while she
has enough to do all the time, she shall
not have more than she can manage
properly. In a large exchange each
girl "puts up connections,” as It is
technically called, at the rate of from
150 to 200 each sixty minutes during
the bUsy hours, which leaves her no
time for anything more than finding
out. what number you want and put-
ting you into communication wlth, it.
If she attempted to do anything else
it would result in, delaying the service.

The questions the long distance op-
erator asks sometimes puzzle people.
Write them on a slip of paper and look
thim over and you will see that they
are Intended to find out just what is
absolutely necessary for making a call
for you and to find It out as quickly as
possible and with the least annoyance.
By answering each inquiry as briefly
as It is made, you help your own ser-
vice measurably and getting in touch
with a man a hundred or a thousand
miles away becomes surprisingly quick
andeasy. The first thing that must be
known, naturally. Is the number of the
telephone from which the call comes.
Then, for the information of the per-
ion to be called, and your own in-
formation when you check up your toll
charges, it is desirable to give your
hame, so "Long Distance” asks for
that, too.
The nme of the town or city you
want to reach, the number of the tele-
phone you want to get and the name
of the particular nerson you want to
speak to, are evidently indispensable.
It often happens that people making
long distance calls do not know the
telephone number of the person they
are calling, and in such cases the oper-
ator will have it looked up if the street
address is given. It is plain how much
time might be lost in getting together
these necessary facts If It were not
done systematically, and one of pur-
poses of the telephone language is to
avoid such possibilities of delay.
At a dinner some time ago Thomas
A. Edison claimed the credit for in-
venting the greatest time-saving device

word “hello” instead of th* clumsier
expression of the earlier days—“Do I
get you?” and "Are you there,” which
by the way, are still in vogue in Eng-
land. Though "hello” is still the one
word most familiarly connected with
the telephone, It has for some time
been the one word which is never used
in a telephone office, for the Bell en-
glneers decided several years ago that
much more time was waster than was
saved by everybody saying “hello”
so much. Its place as a form of in-
troduction, which is all it was ever
intended to be, has been taken by a
fimplesintenatlen ef the voice.————
The up to date subscriber answers
his telephone by giving his name or his
number. If the man who calls him
is equally well posted, he begins his
conversation by telling who he’ is. The
old fashioned formula of “Hello, who is
this?” or "Hello, what do you want?"
was discourteous as well as waste-
ful of precious'seconds. In the pro-
gress of business methods it has been
displaced by the more sensible and po-
lite method of answering the ringing
of the telephone by saying. “This is Mr.
Joneor "This is Main 1234,” to
which the person who calls, assured
that he is speaking with the right
party, naturally responds, "This is Mr.
Smith,” or “This is Mr. Brown of
Brown & Black,” or whatever else may
be most direct and appropriate.
"Central’s" way of spelling out num-
be rs at first struck telephone users
as queer. You ask for main seventy-
mnine-eleven, and the operator repeats
it as main seven-nine-double onesThis
scheme was adopted to avoid confusion
for no two voices sound alike, and, as
we all know, spoken numbers are often
easily mixed up—seven and eleven,
for Instance In the case cited. More-

St, Austin, Texas, says: “I have no
reason to change the good opinion
which I publicly expressed through our
Austin papers three years ago. I then

several different remedies, but until I
took Doan's Kidney Pills nothing

cured by. their use.", ,,2,2
