The new Six-40 is not a so-called “little
six,” but a husky, man-size car of distinctive
appearance and at a price within the reach
of the average pocketbook.
Only such genius as that evolved through
fifty patient years’ experience in fine coach
building could have achieved so complete

No matter what kind
of a car you drive or
what kind of a battery
there is on it you have
to keep posted on cer-

You have to know
whether your battery is
charged to the proper point
—whether it has enough
water in it—whether each
of the cells works properly.
Our most important job
as a Battery Station is to
tell you these things. It
doesn’t make a bit of dif-

Here’s a car for those who shun the com-

meets the keen desire for that distinction

The Six-40 bears living testimony that a

The mite of Velie Factory with which
the motoring public has long been fa-
miliar, is literally nearer two miles
today," said H. T. Wheelock, Adver-
tising Manager of the Velie Motors
Corporation. "It was "A Mile* many
years ago."
"It is interesting to note how the
factory has grown from the old days
when the Velie was in the man an as-
sembled car. The institution today is
typical of the expansion of the mar-
ket.
“The establishment two years ago
of the Velie’s own motor plant, one
of the largest in the country, is but
one of the many steps by which the
Velie has become one of the most com-
plete factories in the market Velie
cars are as nearly 100 per cent built
in our own factories as possible.
“Up-to-date machinery for Automo-
bile building is in itself so highly
specialised as to make an institution
o fthis kind a point of great interest
to the public. Velie factories are of-
ten thronged with visitors from distant
points. Tours of all the divisions are
systematized under guides.
"In addition to the Motor Plant, we
have big metal-working shops, a
splendid new enameling plant, clutch
factory, wheel factory, a large plant
building Velie bodies, another division
in which the Velie mirror-finish is
applied, and so on.
“In fact a close-working industrial
community in which may be witnessed
the processes of automobile building
from the very beginning to the final
touch of lustre.
“This means, not only superiorities
in engineering;5 design, material and
workmanship; it means the perfect co-
ordination of parts not possible where
manufacture is scattered thru many
unrelated concerns.
“It means a unified car, and a uni-
fied responsibility behind it.
“It means a pride in manufacture
that finds its complement in a real
Durability, depends largely upon the
size of the parts and the care and skill
with wich they are fitted and incor-
porated into the structural make up;
of the ar. Larger bearings and bet- ’
ter fitted parts. are more expensive
in constructing a car and a purchaser!
should give heed to these particulars.
Economy, is a highly important)
factor. In a quality car comfort and !
performance combine to fix the power j
to weight ratio within rather broad •
limits. The less weight the less power ;
needed, and the greater economy and J
to attain economy the highest grade I
of material must be employed and the |
highest skill in combining them in the
most economical way is expensive. |
Performance, mrans weight and high i
power skillfully balanced. The in- ’
crease in size of the engine cost more
and the reduction of weight instead
of incrensing power is costly to the
manufacture.
Reliability, depends upon every part
of the car being what it was intended
to be and depends upon the care that
is excercised in inspecting, testing and
assembling.

Mr. Gordon succeeds J. E French,
who resigned to take over the Dodge
Brothers dealership in San Francisco,
where he maintained his headquarters
•or several years as Dodge Brothers
• district representative.
Mr. Matheson, the new vice presi-
dent, has bee nan important figure in
the automobib ndisstry for many
years. With his brother, Frank Math-
eson, he built and marketed one of
the first higher priced cars in the
field. When Dodigs Brothers began
manufacturing a car of their own he
became New York district representa-
, tive, and a few years later was ad-
vanced to the home office as director
• of service. His appointment as gen-
oral sales manager followed in 1920.
Mr. Nichols, the new general sales
manager, has also been on the execy-
1 tive staff of Dodge Brothers from the
i time they first began building cars.
He was for five yeare Seattle district
representatve, then was advanced to
the Now Wk office. It was from

The most serious question agitatinE
the mind of the automobile manufact-
urer and it also agitates the mind as
well as .he pocketbook or bank roll of
the purchaser is presented thus:
“What is the sure enough reasonable
price for a car?” The manufacturer
wants to know what the right price
lor a car is, in order that he may man-
ufacture the right kind of a car for
which he can demand the right kind of
a price. It is pretty generally accepted
that the present prices for automobiles
have reached the lowest point which
will allow the manufacture of cars to
continue, with profit to the manufac-
turer and the purchasing public.
Every article manufactured and
used in the construction of a car
means that work was spent in produc-
ing IL Likewise the fashioning of
material into parts equipment and ac-
cessories for cars was pad for in
work. Comfort, durability, economy,
performance and reliability are the
factors entering into the make of
automobiles and upon these the man-
ufacturer must largely rely to de-
termine what makes the cost of his
particular product. Appearance is a
consideration in determining the cost
of producing a car but it is not a
heavy factor in determining the price
to the consumer for the reason that
appearance depends upon the design
of the car and there are cheap cars
whose lines may appear more graceful
thn numerous better mile and higher
priced cars. In too many instances
appearance is obtained at the expense
of durability, economy, performance
and reliability.
