THE GUMPS — GOOD ADVICE FROM A GOOD LAWYER
One device on a motor vehicle which
is the least cared for the by the own-
er probably because it needs little at-
tention is the speedometer. This use-
ful and delicate mechanism is to the
automobile what the pressure gauge is
to the steam boiler, it is in a manner
of speaking a safety device; it tells
you when you are putting on "too
much steam."
The speedometer has been called the
watchdog of the automobile, but it
might more truly be called the watch- .
dog of the owner’s pocketbook. The
wise automobilist checks up on his I
speedometer periodically to insure its
accuracy. Then he checks up regular-
ly on the speedometer's readings to
make sre he is getting maximum ga-
soline-and oil mileage. This his speed-
ometer tells him if the component parts
of the car are functioning as thv
should.
Some knowledge of the speedomet-
ers makeup is essential to the car
owner who would keep it in proper
condition for the work it must do. J
Four definite types of speedometers i
—the English prefer to call them "odo-
meters’—are in use. These are mag-
netic, centrifugal, hydraulic and air-
actuated. The magnetic type is prob-
ably the most common.
