“Not a word now, but come over to
the tea room for lunch and I will tell
you a tale that will rival Schehera-
zad’s best!"
We were so hungry we did not care
whether the detective saw us or not.
Without deigning so much as to turn
cur heads, we hurried up the Avenue
and in a few minutes were at the tea
room.
Ada was already there. She greet-
ed us with a demand for explana-
tions of our delay but we were too
busy satisfying our hunger to answer.
Billy was a favorite with the cook,
that was evident for she waited on us
without a complaint
“You is the beatinest chile!” she
said. "Some mawnin’ you’ll fohget to
wake up an’ then whah’ll you beT”
"Musn’t ask such embarrassing
questions!" said Billy between bites.
The day passed uneventfully, though
I kept my eye on the door as much
1a pozsigle, halr fearing, half hoping
that Ted would come in. I would es-
cape to the kitchen if he did come
but Just the same I wished he wouid.
It might mean that Alec had sent him
or maybe he would be with him.
I went straight home to bed after
the dinner hour was over, not daring
to stop for a paper. Billy hurried out
to a party after tucking me in safely
as she expressed it and brushed aside
all my thanks Aor her kindness and
resourcefuineas that day.
You need a reet!" she declared
"Now go to sleep and forget the melo-
drama. Friend husband has been
thrown off the track today and to-

Good for her.” Bi Uy breathed Inta
my ear. "Heaven knows who locked
that door but if the detective isn’t hot
on the trail outside now, my middle
name isn't Hunch!"
For the second time Billy was right.
There was a wild scuffle of feet. With-
out waiting for the key to the employ-
ee s door to be found, our pursuer
dashed out the way he had come. I
opened my mouth to call out in my
rellef but Billy sensing my intention,
muffled the sound before I could
speak.
."Walt tll the females go back to
their shopping," she whispered with
total, disrespeet for the sex to which
he belonged. "Marian will come back
and let us out, don’t worry.”
There was a silence outside. Now
that the excitement was over I be-
can to feel weak. Billy’s arm was
around me, bracing me up.
A good, hot cup of coffee would
co to the spot, now," she whispered.
Netx time you want me to take part
in a melodrama serve the coffee first!"
For the first time I realized that
we had not had any breakfast No
wonder I felt weak.
The click of Marian's French heels
cutside was a welcome sound. A key
turned in the lock and half blinded
by the sudden light, we stumbled out
of our hiding place,
"Marian, you've been an angel and
a brick and everything else!” exclaim-
ed Billy before Marian could speak.
