When the slippers of three princesses
were found wound into holes for many
succeeding mornings, the king offered
to give either of his daughters in mar-

mystery that had baffled the court
officers.
Many hau tried, only to fall asleep

the next morning Finally a common
soldier declared that he would win
the prize, but was warned by the king
and his executioner that, if noblemen
could not solve the mystery, certainly
a common soldier might expect to meet
the fate that had befallen them. To
dissuade him from the effort and to
show what would befall him toe ex-

head of a frog when the soldier inter
