fought the case in the Supreme
Court and when he came to the
Senate became known as the best-
informed member on the tidelands
controversy. He was assigned to the
Senate Interior Committee that
handled the bill restoring the off-
shore area to the states and effec-
tively argued for the states’ posi-
tion in committee and on the Sen-
ate floor debate.
Daniel, like Shivers, supported
Ike in 1952 largely because Adlai
Stevenson stated he would not ap-
prove a tidelands restoration bill,
while Eisenhower announced he
favored the legislation.
As to the 1956 presidential race,
Daniel has stated he will back the
Democratic ticket unless his con-
science completely bars him from
doing so. To all intents and pur-
poses, Daniel is fully back in the
Democratic fold and has been so
accepted by his Senate colleagues.
Daniel’s present plans are to open
his campaign for Governor around
June 1. He is now centering his at-
tention on legislation strengthen-
ing the federal laws on the illicit
narcotic traffic.
A Senate judiciary siubcommittee
the reared held hearings over the
country and a bill imposing stiffer
now awaiting Senate committee
approval.
TVERY year, more and more new
— cars are equipped with Power
Steering. Many a man has bought
it “for the wife”—then wondered
how he ever got along without it.
And if you have in mind a new car
with Power Steering consider this
fact:
Since the beginning of last year,
Buick has sold far more new cars
equipped with Bower Steering*
than any other car — over 20,000
more in 1955 alone.
That’s the record—and the reasons
for it are just as impressive.
Buick brings you In-Line Safety
Power Steering. In addition to the
one-finger ase of turning common
to all such systems in varying degree,
it has several distinct advantages.
It gives you surer, steadier, safer
control at highway speeds—because
it retains that good natural “feel” of
the road.

“Senator Daniel had more sup-
porters in both camps than any
other candidate for Governor,” said
a Daniel backer.
Daniel, who was elected to the
Senate in 1952, actively supported
President Eisenhower that year, as
did Governor Shivers.

Actually there have been no re-
ports of desegregation aboard buses.
Negroes are continuing their five-
month-old boycott of city buses in
protest over the seating arrange-
ments.
City officials, in filing their in-
junction petition, said desegrega-
tion on city buses more than likely
would bring about violence and
possible rioting.
“A situation of tension and un-
rest has been created in the city
of Montgomery, which is likely to
explode into violence at any time,
if not restrained,” Judge Jones said

Add another plus: this Buick feature

new response and a wonderfully
easy handling and a surer “sense of

He contented himself with en-
dorsing Johnson for Texas favorite
son and for national consideration
for the presidential nomination.
Daniel, in a statement last March
8, supporting Johnson for the nom-
ination, did not mention delegation
chairman, which Johnson sought
and won over Shivers’ opposition.
Daniel recalled he had suggested
Johnson for favorite son in nation-
wide television program last year.
“I think it would be good if Tex-
as would agree on Johnson as a
favorite son candidate,” Daniel said
last March, before Johnson had de-
cided to try for the place. ‘In fact,
as an all-out ' contender for the
nomination, I think he would have
a good chance and would be more
acceptable to Texas, the South and
the West than any other candidate
so far mentioned.”
After the Johnson-Rayburn vic-
tory in last Saturday’s precinct
conventions, Daniel said the result
strengthened Johnson as a presi-
dential possibility.
During the heat of battle be-
tween Shivers and the Johnson-
Rayburn forces, leaders in each
camp who are actively backing
Daniel for Governor conferred on
the junior Senator’s campaign
plans.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Circuit
Judge Walter B. Jones, taking note
of racial tension and unrest here,
yesterday ordered Montgomery city
lines to discontinue a desegregation
policy on city buses.
Jones held that segregation on
buses which operate solely within
states has not yet been outlawed
by the U. S. Supreme Court and
added that nothing in the federal
Constitution prohibits it.
On these grounds, the veteran
jurist ordered the bus company to
“comply and abide” by city and
state laws which forbid mixing of
races on public conveyances.

in his decision.
“There is no straight-out decision
of the Supreme Court of the Unit-
ed States holding that a state or
city may not require the separation
of the races on buses where carri-
age of passengers is solely intra-
state,” he said.
An April 23 Supreme Court de-
cision had been interpreted as out-
lawing segregation on city buses.
Some lawyers now contend it
didn’t.
Power claimed for the federal
government in the South Carolina
bus case “does not exist and never
has existed,” Jones said. “It is a
power reserved to the states and
their people.”
