Illustrative of the subjects used in
“Unusual Occupations” was that of
a man who tastes soap for a soap
manufacturer, a woman who makes
clothing from snake skins and a
doctor who makes knives of such
strength that the blade of a pen-
knife can be driven through sheet
steel.
Typical subjects in “P pular Sci-
ence,” according to the letter, have
been the use of cotton textiles in
Texas for road building, the Baylor
University “blood bank”, and a de-
vice which uses rays of the sun for
cooking.
If anyone knows of any unusual
hobby or occupation which might
make an interesting subject, he is
asked to write a detailed letter to
the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce.
Use of tear gas (chloropicrin) makes
it practical to grow gladioli in soil
where previous plantings have been
destroyed by the fungus disease
known as gladiolus yellows, accord-
ing to the United States Depart-
ment of Agriculture.
This address will be non-political
in every respect, but will give the
people of this section something to
think about. Everyone is urged to
tune in for this program.

THREE meals a day can turn into exciting adventures if you have a reper-

Is a luncheon set that has a look of clean-spun sugar in its freshness and you
can crochet it yourself for less than two dollars, using mercerized crochet
cotton. It’s the type of design, too, that will receive attention in the Nation-
Wide Crochet Contest- this fall. Directions for crocheting it, and details oi
the Contest may be obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope
to the National Needlecraft Bureau, 385 Fifth Avenue, New York City. Specil-

It is pretty grim patriotism to kill
and injure Texans on a holiday
celebrating our independence, Mar-
vin Hall, state fire insurance com-
missioner, reminded this week as he
issued a plea to city officials to
adopt emergency measures banning
the promiscuous sale and use of
fireworks in all forms on the 4th of
July.
“We must not make it easy for
the saboteur to gain possession of
quantities of explosive material,” the
Commissioner said. “It doesn’t make
sense to guard our armories and
sources of raw materials, all the
while permitting this, orgy of noise
and hazard to continue.”
He said approximately one-third
of the total United States popula-
tion is protected from injury due to
fireworks because of state legisla-
tion and city ordinance.

A photographic unit of Scientific
Films, Inc., is to be routed through
Texas in the near future and Lub-
bock Chamber of Commerce wants
to know whether there may be sub-
jects in the South Plains area
which might attract it.
The company produces the “Pop-
ular Science” and “Unusual Occu-
pations” short subjects in color for
release through Paramount Pic-
tures.
A letter to the chamber of com-
merce from Dick Diamond, head of
the research department of Scien-
tific Films, said that the unit will
visit Texas in the near future and
that “we would be deeply grateful
for names and addresses, and de-
tails of any people in your vicinity
whose work or hobby may be of
sufficient interest to warrant inclu-
sion in either “Popular Science” or
“Unusual Occupations.”

Figures compiled by the State
Highway Department for the regis-
tration year ended March 31, 1940,
show a total of 1,682,288 motor ve-
hicles registered compared to 1,611,
613 in the previous registration year.
This is an increase of 70,675 ve-
hicles, or 4.3 per cent.
The total net license fees collected
amounted to $19,838,178.02, which
was an increase of $927,290.94, or
4.90 per cent over the preceding
registration year. Of the total fees
collecter, $11,903,148.74, or 60 per
cent of the total was retained by
the counties, while the State re-
ceived $7,935,029.28, or 40 per cent.
A comparison of motor vehicles
registered in 1940 compared to 1930
reveals that in the past 10 years,
registrations have increased 280,
540 or 20 per cent. In the same
period, milage assumed by the De-
partment for construction and
maintenance increased from 18,323
miles to 22,644, or a 24 per cent in-
crease, while the money available
to the Department for construction
and maintenance of the State Sys-
tem has increased but 2 per cent.
With increased demands for high-
way improvement being received
monthly and a reduction in Feder-
al funds for road building now being
passed by Congress, it appears that
the Department will soon enter a
period of reduced activity and that
highway improvement must be
curtailed.

The “K” Band flag swingers will
make their debut Saturday morning
in the parade celebrating the com-
pletion of the water and sewer sys-
tem. For the first time, they will

Last year the swingers made several
appearances during the football
season, but only performed while
standing still.
Mildred Austin, Mary Louise
Cooper, Elsie Mae Cole, Martha
Murphy, Doris Storey, Marie Bevills
and Evelyn Lipham have been work-
ing on this new marching routine
Six of these will be chosen to march
in the parade Saturday.
The flags they use are small ones,
being 30 inches square, and are

The Kermit schools will enter two
floats in the parade for the Water
Celebration and Carnival here to-
morrow.
“The grade school float will re-
present the activities the pupils
participate in during the summer
program,” said Mr. Joe Morris,
grade school principal.
Miss Lucille Spruill is in charge
of decorating the float, and all
other teachers in grade school will
assist her. McAlister and Wade have
promised the grade school a truck
to use as a float.
A queen of summer activities will
be chosen and children taking part
in the various activities as tennis,
basketball, archery, folk dancing,
play, art, rythm band and library
will act as subjects in the queen’s
kingdom.
The float will be decorated in
white with red and blue trimmings.
“I think it very fitting for the
grade school to have such a float.
To the parents who do not visit the
summer school, it is a display show-
ing what the children do in a
democracy,” said Miss Spruill.
The high school float will be on
the same order as the grade school
with the exception of the queen.
Activities that will be displayed are:
homemaking, ping-pong, Chinese
checkers, archery, tennis, badmin-
ton and library. Mrs. Johnnie Shi-
mer, Mr. Frank Harlan and Mr.
Elmo Glass will be in charge of the
float.
It will be decorated in the school
colors of maroon and gold, and all
students who wish may help deco-
rate it. This float will also be made
on a truck, which will be furnished
by J. R. Marshall.
The “K” Band dressed in full
uniform will lead the parade, which
will start at 10 o’clock near the de-
pot.
“Our float will represent all the
sports and activities we have in high
school,” Mrs. Shimer said.
