An extensive campaign for new
members and additional subscriptions
is being conducted by mail at this time
by the Galveston United Charities, un-
der the finance committee of that or-
ganization. Although the last of the
invitations to become members were
only mailed out yesterday, already a
flattering number of favorable replies
have been received. Between seven and
eight hundred letters soliciting addi-
tional members have been mailed out,
and it is expected that the membership
and subscription list of the organiza-
tion will be substantially increased as
a result; the people of Galveston who
were not already members, seemingly,
were only waiting to have their atten-
tion called to the matter, to join in the
Work.
Mrs. Mary E. Wood, secretary of the
Charities, is expected to return shortly
from Kansas City, where she has been
spending her vacation, visiting rela-
tives and friends. This is the first va-
cation Mrs. Wood has taken since she
became connected with the Galveston
organization, and before leaving, she
planned to visit the various charitable
organizations in Kansas City, with a
view to observing their methods of
operation.

street and Avenue H, while the girl
was crossing the street en route to
her home on the southeast corner -ot
the streets. The automobile truck,
loaded, was going east on Avenue H. To
keep the sun from her eyes, it was testi-
fied, Blanche Fugger, had her eyes
shaded With her hand and failed to see
the truck which, it was further testi-
fied, was not moving rapidly, although
no horn-or bell alarm from the truck
was said to have been sounded. Two
mule-drawn floats were going west on
the same street and between these two
floats the girl had passed when the
accident occurred. Drivers of the two
floats stopped and went to the assist-
ance of the mortally injured girl, as
did others near the scene at the time,
one of the negro drivers' pulling the
girl from beneath the truck wheel. The
left wheel of the truck struck the fatal
blow to the young girl.

Evidence that the salt water
which overflowed the island
farms during the tropical hurri-
cane of Aug. 16-17 did not in-
jure the soil so much as had
been feared was brought to town
today by Theodore Boehl, whose
home is 12 miles down the
island. The evidence consisted
of cucumbers, cantaloupes, pump-
kins and squash which have been
grown and matured since the
storm.
These products were grown
on the farm of John Wern, which
is near that of Mr. Boehl. All
the vines came up as “volun-
teers” after the storm and had
very little attention. All the
products were of good quality
and size.
There will be ripe watermelons
from the same farm by next
week if there is no cold weather,
said Mr. Boehl.

It was later announced that burial

But why go on!
The results of all their work are ready.
It is surprising, with such collaboration, that GRIFFITH, producer of “The
Birth of a Nation”; INCE, famous for the “Battle of Gettysburg”; SENNETT,
creator of Keystone Comedies, and the splendid directors working with them,
should have outstripped anything ever imagined in the making of beautiful pictures? And
is it surprising that not only the great big public, but thousands and thousands of people who
have never thought of going to pictures before should be waiting eagerly for this announce-
ment? Yes, it has been a great summer. But—the time has come!
