tion of the part taken by Herbert Up-
dike in the plot of his brother Irving

dike, millionaire retired broker, the in-
tended victim of the conspiracy, renew-
ed his refusal to furnish bail for his
sons, both of whom are in custody

of the arrest that Herbert Updike was
held only as a witness, a statement by
the boy’s father that he considered his
sons equally guilty and the report that
Herbert had married a Chicago caba-
ret entertainer influenced the police

Washington, Jan. 18.—Mexico came
up in the senate again today when
Senator Lippitt, Republican, had the
clerk read an editorial attacking Pres-
ident Wilson and eulogizing the late
General Huerta. The reading had not
conveyed that the railroad companies
can now state positively,that they will
be ready to discuss the adoption of a
causeway plan on Feb. 10.
Hitherto Mr. Merritt has adhered to

While no reference was made to the

Judge Mann adds that he has notified

possible that the railroads have, agreed

Washington, Jan. 18.—Tentative
agreement on the terms of the admin-
istration shipping bill, which will be
pressed in congress this session, was

ander of the house marine committee.
Mr. Alexander said he would introduce
the bill early next week and before
doing so will make it public.
It is known to include provision for
a shipping board to regulate rates in
much the same way as the Interstate
Commerce commission regulates rail-
roads, and also provides for acquisi-
tion of ships which can be used as na-
