America's great mansions, outstanding even during the lush Victorian
era it was built as a ttwn house bv Whitelaw Reid in 1895, four years
alter his marriage to Elizabeth Mills. Both were multi-millionaires.
With Mr Reid's entry into diplomacy and politics, their Interests became
j. worldwide. Mrs Reid became, and remained until her death, a brilliant
leader of internatlonal soxciety. The house, theretore, was the scene of
iiuny distinguished soial gatherings, attended by scores of the world’s
statezsmen, nobility nd royalty in 1919, the majestic, two-story ball-
room was the scene ot one of the most splendid of these—the ball in
honor of the Prince of Wales. ' Palatial is the only word to describe the
Interior of the mansion, designed and decorated by Stanford White, lead-
J ing architect of ills day Most of its rich furnishings were sod at auc-
tion in 1934 Some 5,000 persons attended the two-day sale, which net-
led nearly $160,000 During World War I, Mrs Reid turned the house
। over to the Red Cross, as a teaching center. Closed since her death Ui
1931, it was re-opened during World War II as a club for the women’s
auxiliaries of the Allied forces ano offices for the French Relief Society.

Four Justin boys, active as Future

i awards in the Houston Stock Show
last week, C L. Green, sponsor of
the group, announced today.
The two championship awards I
went to Bert H Gibbs, 15-year-old
son of Mr and Mrs Howard Gibbs. I
who showed the prize- winning ram |
, and the prize- winning ewe in the
Southdown class.
j Young Gibbs also won second and '
third place awards for ills ewe
l lambs in that class and a seventh
place on another Southdown class
ewe.
Jimmie Bradley, 15-year-old son
of J. G. Bradley, won third and
fifth place awards for his fat lambs
in the Shropshire class, and Glenn
Ray Tuley, 14, took second place
I in iliat class.
B B Webb, 15, won fifth place
I on a calf lie entered in the short-
| horn calf class. His animal weighed
785 pounds and sold for 37 1 2 cents
a pound.
An unexpected prize was won by
Bradley when he was awarded a I
; 250-pound Aberdeen Angus calf in a '
