Denton RECORD-CHRONICLE
WASHINGTON, Feb 21. A"
Kenneth C. Royall, undersecretary
of war, said today the War Dez
partment is prepared to meet
"head-on" any charge that the Ar-
my tuts been guilty of "wanton de-
struction ol property.”
Instead of destroying surplus -
goods which might have civilian or
military usefulness, he said, "if any-
thing. it is spending too much ।
money and too many man-hours to
protect property of a doubtful,, val-
ue.”
* Royall conceded in a statement
prepared for the House expendi-
tures committee that naturally,
there have been cases of improper
destruction. There always will be
some men in any large organization
I who will overlook regulations or.
perhaps, ignore regulations ”
He said the War Department in- l
vestigated all complaints and found I
most are grossly exaggerated "
Rep. Gossett (D-Tex) comment- 1
ed that it looks like we are hiwing
pay dirt in this investigation, when
the Navy reverse* itself and starts
doing something to get these goods
back here instead of allow them
to go to waste "
Gossett and others also attached
significance to a statement by
Rear Adm C H. Cotter that there
have been "some cases of unwar-
ranted destruction"' of surplus Navy
goods.
