Beard growers of Denton Coun-
ty have organized into at least 25
Brothers of the Brush chapters
with membership ranging from
eight to 98.
At the present time the Sanger
Coon Hunters leads with 98 mem-
bers. •
Harwell V. Shepard, president
of the Denton Centennial Commis-
sion Thursday urged other groups
to organize.
Each group should select one
man to keep charge of publicity
and . to turn it in to the centennial
headquarters, 113 E. Hickory.
Centennial executives also stres-
sed that the president and secre-
tary from each chapter attend the
regular Tuesday night meetings
with Centennial Belle representa-
tives at the city hall.
The first organized chapter of
Brothers of the Brush was the
Bucket Brigaders. Composed of
members of the fire department,
the Brigaders* president is Cecil
Edwin White and the secretary is
Leroy Peters.
President of the Aubrey Under-
brush Club is G. T. Francis. The
secretary is A. C. Ballard.
An independent group has or-
ganized as the Deuce’s Wild Fron-
tier Club. President is Harry W.
Noles.
Post office employes call them-
selves Uncle Sam’s Whiskers. Or-
val L. Hall is president and Robert
L. Smith, the secretary.
The Ranche chapter elected Ma-
son White president and Carl
Reeves, secretary.
The city line crew has entitled
its chapter Hot Line Boys. Presi-
dent is Clifford E. Recer and sec-
retary H. B. McNay.
Vigilantes is the chapter organ-
ized by county officials. Sheriff
Wylie Barnes is president and
County Judge W. K. Baldridge,
secretary.
Henry Miller will serve as pres-
ident for the Knights of Pythias
chapter. J. O. Pennell is the sec-

The Jaycees call their chapter

his agency hopes, by May 1, to
have reduced to one minute the
time required to flash a warning
of enemy attack to every city in

“In the past it was taken us as
high as 8 or 10 minutes." he said.

clear war shelters would cost
more than 32 billion dollars —
and still protect only about 60 per
cent of the people.
Civil Defense Administrator Val
Peterson told a House Appropria-
tions subcommittee the adminis-
tration is studying some shelter
proposals, but added that “we
should not go off carelessly on a
program of that magnitude."
Hi* said the federal government
eventually “will have to take a
larger hand" in civil defense,
heretofore defined by law as pri-
marily a state and local function.
He said his agency will propose
that Congress make the responsi-
bility a joint federal and local one.
Peterson’s testimony, given
Feb. 6, was published'this week.
He took issue with an estimate
he attributed to the Navy' Radio-
logical Laboratory that a 38-bil-
ident of the Peddler’s and Mer-
chants chapter and Frank Jenkins
secretary.

copter Corp, organized as the Bell

known as the Jet Makers. Floyd
W. Wright is president and Her-

Two other chapters whose offi-
cers were not listed at the Cen-
tennial headquarters are the Con-

first meeting in the Community
Center Wednesday
Officers elected included Charles
B. Redd, regional chirman;
Charles W. Collins, Denton chap-
ter Rresiednt; Jimmy Young, sec-
retary; Clarence Jackson, vice
president; Leon Pickard, assistant
’ secretary; and Rufus Elvan. treas-
urer.
Named to the program commit-
tee were Ezra Punch, M. L. Par-
rimore and Willie Peace. On the
social committee are Roy Le-
Shawn. J. C. Punch and Milford
Parrimore.
The Valiants also decided to of-
fer a Ito prize for the best beard
grown by the club.
