Tourism is big business and sup-
porters of the legislation think the
state would be in a fine position
to get some money poured out by
the tourists. Vacationers spent
more than two billion dollars in
1955 in New York and Florida
tourists shelled out one billion.
With widespread prosperity, the
Bureau of Business Research at
the University of Texas predicted
B5 million Americans will take va-
cation trips this year and "Texas
bids fair to attract a sizeable
number."
Forty-five states have developed
a state advertising program to at-
tract tourists and industries. Many
are financed by state appropria-
tions but some unsuccessful ones
are privately backed. Estimates
of state spending range from less
than 2100,000 to more than one
million dollars.
Fire officials of Sanger, Pilot
Point. Lewisville and Justin Mon-

quest was based on frequent runs
made by trucks to rural areas
where no telephone facilities were
available in case of emergencies.
