land judging competition here
Saturday, but not until the area
president, Jack Norman. of Howe,
turned in a perfect score card in
grass placings.
Young Norman correctly identi-
fied 40 grass species predominent
in North Central Texas, and fol-
lowed with a correct marking of
their growth habits and charac-
teristics.
Officials operating the contest
said he could have spent no more
than 10 seconds on each grass
specie and failed to stumble on
a couple of "trick" exhibits while
preparing the perfect card.
But Tioga, boasting a strong av-
erage card, finished second in
team judging in the grass divsion,
and edged out the Whitesboro
team by one point for the right
to represent the area in state land
judging meets later this spring.
First place grass team was
Whiteright. Maybank was third
and Norman's chapter from Howe
was fourth.
Grayson county monopolized
placings in the land judging
event, taking all four places in
team competition and three of
five places in individual scoring.
Scoring in team land judging
was Tioga 433. first; Whitesboro
432. second; Sherman, 407. third,
and Sadler. 398. fourth. High land
judging individuals were James
Scarbrough. Whitesboro. ISO;
James Chism, Whitesboro, 149;
Max Perkins, Decatur, and Gene
Pechal, Kaufman. 148. tie; and
Y. 0. Bradford. Tioga, 146.
High grass judging individuals
were Norman; Herbert Taylor.
Whiteright. 393. second: Douglas
Heston. Tioga. 390 third: and Al-
ton Frosch. May bah. 390. fourth.
Members of the first place land
team from Tioga were Y. O. Brad-
ford. Joe Duff and Tracy Tolle-
son. Alternate for the team was
Homer Martin.
Assisting area vocational agri
culture advisors with the Judging
event were Soil Conservation Ser-
vice personnel working with the
