hit ball here Tuesday to register
a 30 District 8-A baseball victory
over Springtown High School in a
tight pitchers' duel.
Moore whiffed six enroute to his
victory. The win boosted the Bear-
cate’s loop mark to 2-2 with three
games remaining. They are sched-
uled to host Bridgeport in a double-
header Thursday.
The Cats bunched all their runs
in the bottom of the first and then
both pitchers settled down to busi-
ness and hurled shutout ball the
rest of the way.

three prizes for the second period
of the fishing roded being spon-
sored by the Denton Boating Club.
Although entries increased
slightly over the first period
which ended April 19, the heavy
rains kept the number of contest-
ants below the number expected
by officials.
High waters and floating debris
have made conditions poor for
fishing. However, Ralph Higgins,
Denton Boat Club president, no-
ted he was hopeful of more favor-
able weather during the final two
months of the contest.
Ferguson hauled in a 9 pound
10 ounce black bass to take first
prize in that class. Second place
went to Sam Taylor. 1206 Mc-
Cormick, with a 5 pound 7 ounce
fish.
Ferguson caught his fish at
Lake Texoma and it was weighed
at the Sports Shop. Taylor’s fish
was caught at Grizzley Slough and
weighed at Bobs Place at Lake
Third prize in the blnek bass
division went to Lucillie Wood of
Grapevine. Her fish weighed 3
pounds 13 ounces and was caught
at Grapevine lake.
Nine entries were received in
the black bass division. Fivs en-

and Sexton halved their four-ball
match with Richardson and Gro-
gan as Richardson — the Sopner

Each of the first-place winners
received a rod and reel. The sec-
ond prizes awarded were Coleman
lanterns and a tackle box was the
third-place award.
Four more periods remain in
the contest. The current period
closes May 15 while the contest
closes June 30.,
At the end of the contest, a
grand prize of a rod and reel will
be given the largest fish entered
in each of the three divisions.
Thus far, Schertz leads in the
crappie class with his fish weigh-
ing 2 pounds 2 ounces.

The Eagles win get a shot at
their first MVC foes next season
in the form of Tulsa Oklahoma
ASM andDrake. North Texas,
however, will not be eligible to
compete for the MVC champion-
ship since four conference games
are required
Drake and Oklahoma ARM will
come to Denton for games while
the Eagles will go to Tulsa for a
tilt with the Hurricanes.
The only other new team on the
schedule will be San Jose State.
North Texas gridders go to San
Jose, Calif., to test the power of
the always - strong small • college
power in coast circles.
Missing from the 1857 slate will
be flto iwo teams which wrecked
a possible undefeated season for
the Eagles in 1956. Mississippi and
Arizona State have been drop-
ped from the schedule as has Mid-
western and San Diego Naval
Training Center,
The '98 version of the Eagles
finished the season with a 7-2-1
record for the best Eagle mark
since 1947. They dropped their first
two games to Old Mbs and Ari-
zona State and then came back
to go through eight games with-
out a loss.
Only s tie with Trinity marred
the remainder of the schedule and
caused the two schools to split
the Gulf Coast Conference grid
title. Mitchell wil have 19 letter-
men returning from his ‘56 squad.
In addition, several transfers
looked outstanding in spring train-

at the Indian Hills Country Club
in Tulsa.
In view of their team victory in
the Southern Intercollegiate in
Athens, Ga., over the weekend,
the Flock has been installed as
the favorites in this, their first
MVC meet.
The Eagle foursome of Powell,
Whetzle, Sexton and Reed captur-
ed the championship in the South
era — the No. 2 collegiate tour-
ney in the nation — by edging
Houston by two strokes.
As has been the rule all year,
the Flock’s stiffest competition is
expected to come from Houston,
the 1956 NCAA champions. The
two schools have met five times
