The effort was not spec-

good signs, all things con-
sidered.
Allen High School returned
to the track Thursday for its
first competitive outing of the
year in boys track and field.
Thursday’s tri-meet, held at
Eagles Field, is to be equated to
a scrimmage in any other sport,
according to Allen coach War-,
ren Saucier.
“This meet was nothing more
than a measuring stick for me,”
Saucier Friday said.
“The whole purpose of the
meet was to give me an idea of
where we are, and where we
need to go.
“I didn’t feel that good about
how we did immediately after
the meet, but after thinking
about it last night and then this
morning, I have decided we’re
really not in all that bad of
shape.”
Terry Newby, who has spent
much of his time lately working
out with the varsity baseball
team, recorded a surprising

Norton’s ankle remains
tender from a sprain he suffered
two weeks ago and Williams
and Isley have been bitten by
winter bugs. Williams is ex-

“We didn’t turn in any blaz-
ing times,” Saucier said, “but
that can work to your advan-
tage at this time of the year.
“You don’t want to peak too
early, and that surely wasn’t
the case with us.”
Nevertheless, there were the
good signs, including Jim Pop-
son, who last year reached
regionals in high jump competi-
tion and this year is vying for
the 4A state title.

However, Thursday he
forewarned his high jump com-
petitors with a 6-foot-4
clearance. He cleared 6-foot-6 in
the meet, but that jump came
after he had already spent his
allotted three attempts.
“There are still a few things
we need to work on, but they
aren’t anything we can’t over-
come,” Saucier said.
“It’s like in football when the
holes open up but your backs
fail to hit them. You adjust, and
then you’re in fine shape.”
