The barbecue at midday as pre
vioiuly announced was exclusively
fur the working people. Barbecued
meat bread and coffee were served
to several hundred men. Mr. Rat-
clille gave u holiday to his hands
uumberiug three huudred so they
iniht be present at the barbecue
and see the big canal filled with
water. The feast was served in the
house occupied by the engineer and
other employes uf the company
the wiwd and dust being too bad to
allow its being served ont-of doors.
Two large oxen and fuur sheep
were slaughtered and were roast
ing in pits for about twenty-four
hours before serving.

Early in theatternoon the crowds

gather and the road to Villa Nueva
was alive with carriages and whi
ttles of all dtscriptiuu. Nearly all
of our leading citizens were out
including a great many ladies.

second time to show the people how
they worked and everyone whs de
lighted to see the great strenin t
water rushintr into the canal. Then-
were hundreds of spectators all
deeply iuteretd in the linn I con
summation of this important enter-
prise and viewing ih" scene with
great enthusiasm. The band was on
hand nil the afternoon playing
gaily and the grounds were well
supplied with dulce and ice cream
vendors who did a lively business.
Sandwiches and beer were served
to as nmuy as could be accommo-
dated. All enjoyed the affair im
mensely and were specially inter-
ested in viewing the machinery at
the pumphnuse which the accom-
plished aud accommodating en
gineer Mr. E. J. Rice exhibited
and explained with untiring court
esy to all comer. Several snap
shots of the water running into the
canal aud of the crowd were taken
by amateur photographers. It was
quite late brfore the crowda dis-
persed aud returned to town. Al-
though the weather was disagne-
ably wiudy and dusty uooueeem
ed to mind it and only general re
joicing and mutual congratulations
upon the event they were gather
ed to celebrate were heard from
the lips uf all.

The meeting of the Ladies'
Euchre club at the residence uf
Captian and Mrs. Win. Kelly last
evening was a most delightful af-
fair. As usual at the evening
meetings the club entertained its
gentleman friends which added to
the pleasure of the evening. There
were eleven games played and
when concluded it was found that
Miss tidith Foster was the undis-
puted winner of the ladies' royal
prize an ornamental waste basket
aud that Mr. Blair was likewise
ahead nf all others in the race for
the gentlemen's royal prize a
handsome sofa cushion. Mrs.
Ratcliffe ami Miss Annie Kelly
tied for the ladies' consolation
prize. On cutting Mrs. Ratcliffe
won aud was awarded a pretty
pincushion.
After the game tempting re-
freshments of ice cream aud cake
were served.
The tally card provided for the
game deserve special mention each
being adorued with a pretty pen
picture the handiwork of Miss
Gernldiuu Kelly. They were love-
ly und made interesting souvenirs
of the occasion. This was the last
meeting of the dub until fall and
the pbasaut memory it leaves will
make all of the partieipauts look
forwnrd witli blight anticipations
to the renewal of the meeting.
