DOLLAR OP 1804 TURNS UP.
Its Possessor Arrested Suspected
of Couuterfetiug.
Washington June 7. TheTreas-
ury oflicials have been notified that
Captain Abbott of the Secret Ser-
vice Department at Clevelaud has
truce of hu 1804 dollar t hut has set
many Secret Service men to work.
If tiie doliur is genuine it is oue
of the rare coins of the United
Slates and is worth about $3500
to collectors. If it is bogus it will
get some oue iuto trouble.
In 1S04 the Government issued
1900 silver dollars. For some
reason or other it was decided to
recall the issue; 189G of the dol-
lars were returned to the Treasury
and recoined. Four of the dollars
remained in circulation. Siuce that
time collectors have anxiously
sought after them. There have been
many counterfeits of the dollars
but they were so poor that they
were soon detected.
The coin iu question was obtain-
ed by the Government officials
from B. 11. Smith at Lima O.
upon the supposition that it was a
counterfeit. Smith whs takeu to
Toledo. It is said that he is a gam-
bler who traveled all over the
State. While on one of his trips he
went to Lima where he became
stranded. He partook heavily of j
morphine it is claimed and acted
strangely.
Smith visited a pawnbroker aud
wanted to pawu the supposed 1804
dollar or $25. The pawnbroker
kuew the value of the 1S04 dollar
und became suspicious aud report-
ed the matter to the United States
authorities. The latter decided to
arrest Smith as they were of the
opimou that the dollar must be a
counterfeit. Smith is in jail et To-
ledo awaiting the decisiou of the
authorities at Washington. If the
coin is not counterfeit probably it
is the last remaining in circulation
of the 1S04 dollars so much sought.

New York N. Y. June 10. A
rushing business was done by the
first New York co-operative

has just been opened in the Jew
ish quarter under the auspices of
the East Side Ladies' Auti-trust
association. People stood in line
for a block and two thooaud
pounds of meat was disposed of so
rapidly and at one cent less than
the price iu "kosher" shops that
the stock was sold oat in a few
hours. The association has plan-
ued to open shops throughout the
district.

HOTTEST PLACE
IN THE WORLD
Region Where the Thermomettr
Never Falls Below 100 Degrees.
What is believed to be the hot
test region iu the world is that
part of the eastern shore of the
Persian guir which is named after
the Bahrien islands Mint lie near it.
On the Bahrein i-land proper
which is ;he lagest of the group
the thermoiue'er never falls bellow
100 degrees day or uigbt and
often rises as high as 140 degress
iu the shade. Only the uativea
can bear this enormous heat at all
and even they suffer terribly at
times becaime the fiprceness ot th
temperature varies so little and
gives them hardly a respite. To
add in the decided discomforts of
the region th coast is so dry that
borings have been made as deep as
1000 fert without strikiug water.
There is not a drop to be had ex
cept in the far interior and tuv
condition of water curried for any
distance in such heat us this may
be imagined. Yet the natives
never lack tor water that is nut
merely .frrh but actually cool.
And they get it iu a way that is
wonderful. They get it by diving
into the sea for it. Many years
ago pearl Ushers who dived into
the waters off the shores of thess
iflauds tor pearls which are plen-
tiful there discovered that immu-
e springs spouted from the bot
tom of the fen Accidentally they
found that these springs were of
sweet wtr. Kver since then a
regular industry perhaps oue of
;he strangest industries iu the
world lias been that of diving for
fresh water. The divers go out
every morntuir. 'they take with
them goatskins aud weighted
with ftones to insure a swift des-
cent they plunge into the depths.
At the bottom they hold the
mouths of the skins over a spring
and as aoon as it is filled tie it up
swiftly aud ascend. The fekins are
hauled up with lines. As there are
75000 persons in that barren group
of ialaqds the industry of diving for
fresh water is a large oue and the
divers get rijh. The water is about
twenty degrees cooler than is the
atmosphere ou land so it is a boon
to the suffering population and tha
lucky divers who get to land first
are certaiu of high pricas. In fact
the fresher the water is the more
the divers earn and as the subma-
rine springs are only a mile away
from the shore the water hardly
gets time to lose any of its grateful
temperature before it is landed if
one can say that water is "landed."
