Hon. J. IS. Garner
a Candidate for Congress irom as this
the Fifteenth District subject to tin.
Democratic Nominating Convention.
WEDNESDAY JULY 2 1902.
It IS to be presumed of course
that the president saw that tin
White House wine cellars were
well stocked before General Wood
moved in as his guest.
The total amount so fur. ap-
propriated by congress reaches
$927830002 a tidy little sum. It
will probably pass the billion murk
before congress finishes :ip.

Mr. Cleveland says he is ab
'solutely content in his retirement
Perhaps it would be as well for hi;
party if he remained in absolnte
retirement siuse any word from
him has the same effect on many
of the anti-Cleveland democrats as
the act of flaunting a red flag in
the face of a savage bull. The same
might apply equally as well to Col
Bryan whose expressions have
anything but a soothing effect up-
on the gold democrats.
A tardy but inst recognition
'has been tendered Captain Clark
who io the battle of Santiago com-
manded the famous battleship
Oregon in his promotion to the
rank of rear admiral. A similar
honor has been due equally as long
to Captain Cook who commanded
the still more famous Brooklyn in
that engagement. These two ships
undoubtedly bore the bruut of the
battle and almost unaided won the
victor. Yet until now the com-
mander of neither had received
the merited reward. Clark's pro-
motion is at last given. When will
Cook receive his?

there never will be any one person
wlmwill please everybody. The
personality of the rami makes little

correct principles. Neither can a

the cleverest and most tb'.ngeton.-
swindlers from America and the
Continent have been in London
for the purpose of fleecing fashion-
able coronation visitors cables the
London correspondent of the
Herald. A group of five American
sharpers entered a wellknown
West End restanraut and one ot
them renewed acquaintance with a
gentleman whom he thought he
had met years ago. Later they
entered a card game in their apart-
ments in which the acquaintance
lost $5000. Uis supposed friend
also lost heavily but paid in
checks while the victim contri-
buted cash. He notified the police
but the gang had fied. The police
learned the entire parties had
separated one party proceeding to
Paris where a wealthy visitor was
buncoed to the extent of $35000.
