London March 27. The publicity
recently given to the increasing
popularity of corsets among men
seems to have provided the daily
newspapers wjthan interesting sub-
ject for discussion. The Globe
comments on the fashion as follows:
"The modern man lives so
strenuously we are told that he
needs external support. This he
finds in corsets and so far as we
can. gather the evil begins with the
belt against which no one can level
the arrows of scorn and after a
while seduced by a feeling of
comfort the belt gradually increases
in width1 until it becomes a veritable
pair of stays.
"After that all the evils of the
tight lacing begin and the world is
irritated by the sight of pinchwaist-
ed men walking unashamed in our
gtreets rather proud than otherwise
of their monstrous appearance. The
bait is very probably as healthy an
article of wardrobe as the tropical
sombrero or the English umbrella
but it would be straining even the
faddism of modern hi'giene to prove
the utility of stays."
HINTS FOR AMATEUR NURSES.
Never whisper. If you do not
wish the patient to be disturbed by
your voice do your talking in an-
other room.
Keep everything in the room
scrupulously clean.
Put all medicine bottles out of
sight.
Regulate but do not banish light
and ventilation. It can easily be
done by means of screens.
Do not allow several people to
stay and chatter in a sickroom
even though they should not be ad-
dressing themselves to the patient.
Flowers are aluavs pleasing to
the eye but do not lintroduce those
of strong scents into an invalid's
room and be careful to remove all
cut flowers at night as they absorb
the air and leave it Jess fresh for
thn patient.

XolMore Careless Talk on the Wire
in Chicago.
Chicago. To instruct telephone
operators in the art of polite con-
versation over the wire S. A. Craw-
ford the new manager of the Amer-
ican Telegraph and Telephone com-
pany has introduced a book of rules
which the Chicago hello girls have
been conning for a week. The rules
will be put into practice tomorrow.
The book is full of the formalities
and elegancies such as the Boston
telephone girls have been taught to
use after a course of compulsory
education. Here are some samples
of what busy men raav expect to
have fired at them:
"You are speaking to the operator
of the longdistance telephone line."
This in reply to 'Who is this?"
If there is a delay and the patron
calls in the usual Chicago way
"What the deuce is the matter with
mat numDerr" mis JauyiiKe re
sponse will be handed back with
the Boston chill upon it: "I shall
endeavor to ascertain what is the
trouble"
If there is a still further delay
and the man at the other end grows
excited and sends blue flaskes of
language over the wire the hello
girl will reply sweetly:
'I am endeavoring to ascertain
why you do not procure your con-
nection. After I have ascertained I
shall call you. Please hangupyour
receiver."
