SUMMER XORMAL
Opens in Corpus Christi June IS to
$ Continue for Six Weeks.
t Alice Echo.
Prof. Benton informs the Echo
that the Corpus Christi Normal
will open June IS and continue six
w-fcg. He will be conductor ably
'f assisted by Prof. Menger of Corpus
and Prof. Garrison of Floresville.
In addition to the regular instruc-
tors arrangements have been made
with Hon. R. W. Stay ton to deliver
a series of lectures on United States
and Texas constitutions. Dr. A. E.
Spohn will lecture on physiology
and hygiene and Mr. Frank Jermin
of the U. S. weather bureau will
lecture on meteorology. The' hope
to secure Hon. AV. B. Hopkins to
address the tenchers on school law
. teachers' reports etc.
The attendance will surely be
large if the school is properly ad-
vertised. The attendance of 1901 reached
GO; in 1J02 the enrollment was 107
and the attendance will continue to
increase if thecity of Corpus Christi
will do its duty in the way of ad-
vertising. No better place can be found in
Texas fora summer normal. Teach-
ers from all parts of Texas will be
glad to. come if the advantages are
properly set before them. We are
informed that 2G counties were rep-J
resented last year from Kinney
and Uvalde on the west to Ander
son county on the cast. Corpus
Christi must herald her advantages
if she would'draw the reward.
COAL MINERS QUIT.
Strike Commission's Ruling on"
Length of Day's Work Cause
of Trouble.
Philadelphia Pa. April 4 A
disagreement between the mine
operators and minors today regard
ing the strike commission's ruling
on the number of hours to constitute
a day's work resulted in the clos-
ing of many collieries throughout
.. the-anthracite region. The greatest
dissatisfaction was expressed in the
lower region and in Pottsville
Shamokin Mahanoy City and
contiguous towns and most of the
miners were idle part of the day.
At some of the collieries the men
worked eight hours and at others
the.v remained in the mines nine
hours but refused to work ten
hours when requested to do so by
the superintendents. The operators
assert that they will pay the men
.nly for the time worked and the
miners assert that is a violation of
the agreement.
Meetings of the local unions were
held and in most .cases the miners
decided to return to work on Mon-
day and to submit the question to
joint conciliation committees of
operators and mine workers as sug
gested by the commission.
