CHEAP PAINTS AND
WHITEWASH.
Whitewash made in the usual
way then boiled is used for the
base. Stir into each gallon of the
boiling whitewash a tablespoonful
of alum powdered a half pint of
good flour paste and a half pound
of glue dissolved in water. This is
nearly equal to paint and is quite
inexpensive.
Milk paint is made as follows:
Mix hydraulic lime with skim milk
until thick enough to apply with a
brush. The paint is colored by - dis-
solving diamond dj'e powder in
whisky and adding the desired
quantity. Try it on a board and let
dry to gel the color .wanted. This
paint will adhere to wood brick
mortar or stone where oil has not
bsen used and makes a very hard
and durable surface.
A very nice whitewash for rooms
Is made of glue and whiting. Dis-
solve the glue by cooking in cold
water over night then heat untilJ
smooth. -Mis the whiting with cold
water and pour in the hot glue
mixing well. Two ounces of com-
mon glue is needed for four pounds
of whiting. It may be tinted if
desired by using a little diamond
dye dissolved in whisk as men-
tioned for the milk paint. This
makes a nice smooth whitewash.

SCOTCH SENSE.
An Englishman and a Scotsman
were disputing oven the relative
merits of Shakespeare and Burns.
"And you say do you that Billy
Shakespeare was a greater man than
Robbie Burns?"
"Yes I do and every Englishman
knows it."
"But you say ' that it was Shake-
speare who said 'Uneasy lies the
head that wears a croon.' "
"Certainly it was Shakespeare.
Bobbie Burns could never have
said that."
"Noo noo; Bobbie -Burns would
never hae said that; he had owcr
muckle sense to say a thing like
that."
"Ower muckle sense man! What
do you mean?"
"Yes yes; Robbie Burns would
hae kent that ony king would hae
ta'en his croon off and hung it on
the back of the chair before lying
doon. You seem to foraet that
Robbie was a Scotsman."
BIG COWS FROM
SANTA GERTRUDES.
The Santa Gertrudes ranch
shipped out from Alice seventeen
cows to St. Louis Sunday. They
were Durhams and Herefords and
were so big and fat that only seven-
teen were put in the car. Cattle
inspector Y. A. Hinnant and other
judo's ay they were tho largest
and fattest cattle ever shipped out
of the Alice pon?.
Let us figure a . little before the
returns come in. Usually it takes
2S rows to fill a car and thoir
average weight is T.10 jrounds and
the average price is 3 cents. Now
hat amounts to .$0.00. The ?
cows above mentioned will average
in the neighborhood of 1350 pounds
and sell at 5 cents. Figure it out
and you will see that those 17 cows
will bring $1147.50 If they sell
at the same price per pound as the
ordinary cows they will still be
$5S."U athead. Then again it costs
les to handlo. uare for and
feed or graze 17 head than 2S head
of cattle. Improved cattle pay.

WOULD NOT MISS HIM.
"Suppose I should run away with
the cook" snapped Mr. Westmourit
"I bet you would be sorry then."
"Indeed I would"- replied Mrs.
Westmount in alarm. "You must
not do anything so desperate."
"Ah I thought that would bring
you to your senses."
"Yes I could never get another
cook to stay out here."
BOILED DOWN.
On Monday the professor said to
his class: "It is a noticeable feature
of profane history that it ultimate-
ly becomes in most instances a
mere records of wars."
On Tuesday he asked one of the
young men to repeat something
that ho had learned the day before.
"Profane history" said the pupil
"ultimately becomes a mere scrap
book." Brooklyn Eagle.
TO MAKE YOU GROW TALL.
Dr. Springer of Paris has a
method to make onegrowtall. This
is to apply static and faradic elec-

connection with massage night and
