that Mr. Bryan is hammering away
at Senator Bailey in view of his vari-
ous and sundry observations and in-
sinuations as set forth in his Dallas

Considerable damage is being done
to telephone,. telegraph and electric
light poles by members of the wood-
pecker family. These birds originally
built their homes in the dead or dying
trunks or limbs of trees, but for some
reason best known to themselves, have
come to the conclusion, that the peeled
pol© offers better conditions for a home.
They have become .so ravenous of
late that their depredations are at-
tracting considerable attention among
those who are compelled to use quanti-
l ery state east of the Miseiseippi, ex-
,cept Illinois. West Virginia, Kentucky,
Tennessee, South Carolina and Mis-
sissippi have provided hospitals for
tuberculosis patients.
Five states, Illinois, New York, Ohio,
Minnesota and Iowa, passed laws giv-
ing their county officers power to erect
tuberculosis sanatoria without resort-
ing to a special vote. In Maine, Con-
necticut. RI ode Island, New Jersey,
Michigan, Iowa and Kansas, laws pro-
elding for the strict reporting and reg-
istration of tuberculosis were passed.
Only five other states. including the
District of Columbia, have such laws, j

In fact the general tendency is more
towards believing in Cook than in
Peary. Peary has ’ not acted quite
square in this matter—too much like
Teddy Rooseveltism—and the public in
general are rapidly framing themselves
up to look with doubt upon his side of
Eddie Jordan.

JUST ABOUT COMPLETED.
A. D. Jackson, one of the nursery in-
spectors. under the department of agri-
culture, reached here yesterday to
make his final report to the depart-
ment. Mr. Jackson has been during
the past several weeks making inspec-
tion of nurseries in the south and
southeastern portion of the state, and
declares he found the nurseries in fin©
condition. He made an Inspection of
the orange and fig orchards and found
them to be almost entirely free from
any dangerous posts. Chief Clerk
Dixon said that the work of inspect-
