"IFRIDAY DECEMBER 11 1903.
Superiority Of Texas Recruits.
Sergeant Major E. J. Sharpe of
Fort Brown furnished The Herald
the following interesting informa
tion of facts relating to the" war de
partment and the recruits from
Texas:
There were 16335 enlistments
made for the army during the twelve
months ending with Oct. 31 1903
of which 415 were enlisted in the
State of Texas outside of the army
posts. The month having the great-
est number of enlistments 1817 for
October 1903 which showed a gain
of 105 over the corresponding month
of 1902. Texas furnished the largest
army with' 63 recruits in the month
of March which was a gain over
the corresponding' month of 1902 of
just 12 recruits. The total gain for
the year over the corresponding
twelve months preceding in the en-
tire United States was 2044 and for
Texas it shows a gain of 15 From
this it is deduced that Texas is in-
creasing her material support of the
army and the national government
is not slow in acknowledging this
fact.
1 he war department has also rec-
ognized the fact that soldiers re
cruited from the rural districts of
Texas are in many ways superior
to those obtained from the cities
and in a less degree are to be pre
ferred as against the same class of
recruits from other States. To this
end the department has decided to
canvass the rural districts of South
and Southwestern Texas in a vigor
ous manner for the next few months
to the extent of visiting towns along
the Aransas Pass and the Mexican
National railroads as well as the
more populous centers in the in-
terior. An advance agent will leave
Fort Brown within a few days to
convert as many citizens into sol-
diers as possible. At present enlist-
ments will be made especially for
Fort Brown but in exceptional
cases men may be enlisted for
mounted service as may best suit
their particular qualifications or
for service elsewhere in the United
States as the needs of the service
may require.
Notice To Stockholders.
The regular annual meeting of
the stockholders of the First Na-
tional bauk of Brownsville Texas

uiesday January 12 1904 at 4
o'clock p. m. for the purpose of
electing a board of directors for the
ensuing year and the transaction
of such other business as may prop-
erly come before the meeting.
