Careful economy in the use of gas will not only help to offset this
necessary increase in rates for service to th* individual consumer, but
will be helpful to the Company during this period when gas manufac-

It is clearly impossible however for the Company to longer nw"-

The unprecedented advance in the prices of coke, oil and lignite
within the past few months, following substantial increases in costs of
labor and materials throughout the past year, has so increased the cost
of production and distribution of gas that this Company now finds
itself unable to meet its increased operating expenses and render ade-
quat service without increasing its revenue through an advance in its
rates for service.

Believing that any policy which would place the Company in a poai-
tion where it could not meet its obligations even temporarily would in
the end be ruinous alike to the public and the Gas Company, and in
order that it may continue to function properly, it is obliged to
announce a moderate increase of approximately twenty per cent (20%)
in its gas rates and the following schedule of rates will become effective

It has always been the policy of this Company to maintain its plant
and equipment at such a point of efficiency that it might keep pace
with the growth of the city and its necessary demands for service, and
throughout the period during and subsequent to the world war, which
has been a difficult one particularly for public utility companies, it has
adhered to this policy. To this end it has within the past year, added
very substantially to its plant equipment at great expense and at a tune
when the financing of improvements was not an easy matter.
