An instrument of the Department
of Commerce, this station is
manned by chief aircraft com-
municator, G. D. Estes, and his
assistants, one of whose duties 'it
is to take hourly readings of
weather conditions, transmitting
them for the benefit of air com-
merce everywhere.
This is not the only service
given by the communication sta-
tion. but it is perhaps the most
vial, because Gainesville lies di-
rectly upon one of the most im-
portant of the continental air-
ways or flight paths—-one which
originates in Brownsville, pass-
through Fort Worth. Oklahoma
City, Tulsa and Kansas City.
Each plane following this route
mUst be forewarned of any ad-
verse weather conditions, lying
ahead, and if for any reason a
plane should get off the 10-mile
wide path assigned to it, reports
sent out by this station will en-
able the pilot to correct his posi-
tion immediately—an important
safety factor in air traffic.
If an emergency should arise,
the exact position of the adjoin-
ing airport is listed in each pi-
lot’s book of navigation aids.
“A pilot could land one of the
largest airliners safely, evn
while flying ‘blind’,” stated Mr.
Estes.

local airport were discontinued
