The surveying corps of the St.
Louis Brownsville and Mexico
railroad are now camped at Mark-
ham where they will remain un-
til a final survey is made of that
line from the Colorado river to
Blessing on the New York Texas
and Mexican. Work on the new
road was commenced at Bay City
several davs ago. Wharton Eagle.
One of the business men who has
been keeping tab on the conduct
and chance of the boys in villages
says: ' 'Every boy and young man
in town is spotted and when va-
cancies occur-in positions of respon-
sibility ther do not go to those
who hang around public places
nor to those who put in time
smoking cigarrettes and springing
the styles of dudes and mashers
but to the lad who has a clean re-
cord for sobriety industry -and
one who. will-do all in his power
for his emploj'er. A straight clean
manly boy" never has to hunt long
for. a job he always is wanted."

When the old students return
in September to the University of
Texas they will find manN' improve-
niAiit5 jirrnmnnslifd AwxxxiSC . the
summer. The whole institution
has been gone over thoroughly
cleaned scrubbed and . then revar-
nished. all carpets and mattings
taken up and dusted so that every-
thing may have a fresh appearance
and present a sanitary condition at
the opening of the session of 1904-
05. Few people realize how im-
portant all this cleaning and reno-
vating is for the health of the stu-
dents and faculty. The authorities
of the University however feel
that lessons of neatness sanitation
and health can in no way better be
taught than by practical illustra-
tions in the management of the af-
fairs' or the institution.
.A.
The unsanitary filthiness of
Brownsville as reported b3r all the
prospectors who return from there
causes little surprise to be express-
ed at the report that considerable
fever prevails in that cit3r after the
population has been swelled by the
arrival of the railroad. But the
tide of travel continues unabated
to Erownsville and nobody seems
to have been injured by the stinks
-which abound in the metropolis of
the lower Rio Grande. Since a
case of yellow fever is reported at
Fort Brown the militar3r post near
Brownsville there has been no de-
crease in the average number of
tickets bought here by passengers
to Brownsville and the public
seems to either doubt the correct-
ness of the diagnosis of else has
learned some sense since the panic
of a year ago. If the sick soldier
is one of the ball team which es-
sayed a game here recently it
serves him right. " The rest of the
team ought to have a tussle with
the mumps. Corpus Crony.
Such flings as the above are;
really calculated to produce that!
"tired filling." The attention of
the Crony is called to the results
o-the house to house investiga-j
tidns that have been conducted
during the past few days and the
"stinks which abound in the me-
tropolis of the lower Rio Grande"
are not nearly so offensive as the
unfounded reports that find place
in the columns of some of our
newspapers tlius doing incalcu-
lable harm to our city.

Dissatisfied Members of Congregation
- Have Him a Prisoner. .
Pittsburg Pa. Aug. 2S. The
priest of St. Nicholas Croatinan
Church Allegheny is barricaded
in his house under the belief that
an attempt to kidnap him will be
made. The situation is the culmi-
nation of several months of trouble
in the church. A majority of the
congregation it seems accuse the
priest of mismanagement of the
church's finances and demand his
removal. Bishop Phelan refused
to accede to the demands and or-
dered the church closed. No ser-
vices have been held for eight
weeks and today after concerted
action nearly 500 members of- the
congregation headed by a brass
band formed in procession intend
ing to call on the bishop. The
bishop it is stated received word
of the visit and notified the police
with the result that twenty-five of-
ficers met -the procession at the
Pittsburg end of the bridge and
turned the marchers back because
no permit to parade in Pittsburg
had been secured.
The disappointed crowd returned
to Allegheny .'and held an indigna-
tion meeting. The priest received
word after the -meeting through
some source that a resolution 'has
been passed to get rid of him by
force.
