studied by every girl as it teaches
them how to prepare and cook
foods, how to plan balanced diets
and buy economically.
Other advantages of homemak-
ing include: learning how to make
clothes; how to decorate and plan
homes; home nursing in the every-
day life; personal grooming such
as selection of colors for a per-
son’s clothes, type clothes a person
should wear; hair styling and other
characteristics to develop a pleas-
ing personality; and child care re-
ceives much attention as it will
play such an important part in
her future family life.
During the summer months the
homemaking girls plan and operate
a project of cooking, canning, sew-
ing, or anyone of the hundreds of
other things which comprise home-
making.
The Nursery School participated
in by twenty girls and twenty-
eight pre-school children this sum-
mer gave the girls first hand know-
ledge and training in understand-
ing children, in teaching them to
sing and draw, and in finding the
child’s interests, desires and abili-
ties.
Adult classes are organized dur-
ing the summer in addition to the
High School classes, and approxi-
mately eighteen women met at the
school for three weeks this sum-
mer and learned new sewing tricks
and the operation of a Singer Sew-
ing Machine.
Boys are showing a greater in-
terest in shop work and it is be-
ing made a practical course in cab-
inet making and carpentry. The
youths not only learn how to make
simple furniture, but are given a
thorough course in repairing bro-
ken furniture, and doing minor re-
pairs about the house. In the second
year course building construction
work is studied. Complete minia-
ture houses are built by the boys
who must learn the processes in-
volved in building a house from
the foundation to the roof. Boys
who take a major in shop will be
well-trained for jobs in that field
upon graduation.

Services of a bulldozer had to be
engaged this week to push the
trash into the pit—resulting in ex-
tra expense to the city.

By teaching practical things and
in being of service to the school
and community, the homemaking
and shop departments of Kermit
High School are making a name for
themselves.
Under the direction of Melba
Martin, the homemaking depart-
ment offers four units of work in
cooking, clothing and various sum-
mer projects. School officials be-

H. H. Copeland, Kermit High
School's first band director, who
is now a Captain in the U. S.
Army and director of an Army
band at Fort Knox, Ky., com-
posed the official school song.
The song is unique in High
School Alma Mater tunes in the
fact that it has an original mel-
ody.
A signal for all Kermit citizens
to stand at attention when it
is played, the words are as fol-
lows:
SCHOOL SONG.
We’ll cheer for our High School
And hope to sing that victory
song.
We'll stand by her always—

This work will be done in ev-
ery respect in accordance with
current Texas State Highway
Specifications, Item 305A for
Double Asphalt surface treatment.
