The best laid plans of mice and men sometimes go
astray and when they do you can rest assured that a lot
of people will call your hand. <
That’s what happened Thursday in the editorial
comment concerning the cost of mailing 44,000 tax
statements. Somehow, an extra comma, an extra 1 and
two unneeded zeros seemed to indicate that 44,000
times four cents equals $1,176,000 which is fantastic
even with the increased postage rates. Of course, the
figure should have read $1,760.
From comments heard, it's a pretty safe wager that
a lot of people brushed up on their math Thursday try-
ing to figure out what was happening.

Some Points To Consider
Before You MakeDecision
IT’S UNLIKELY that Dentanites will ever forget
last year's successful drive to raise $100,000 to pur-
chase property for the new Denton State School That
drive will certainly go down in/the city’s history as a
pace setter for community-wide endeavors.
Partly as a result of the school drive, Denton County
last year failed to reach the needed quota in the Uni- L
ted Fund campaign, the once-a-year drive that raises
money for 15 of our social, youth, health and character-
building organizations. Certainly the county’s efforts
for the school drive are notable but just as notable
this year is the fact that the United Fund was forced
to use its reserve fund to keep the 15 agencies opera-
ting this year.
Even so. directors of the,United Fund this year have
managed to keep the budget at the same level as last
year even though reserve funds are now depleted. The
quota of almost $53,000 is just about half of what_
Denton County raised for the school last year.
Perhaps that should be kept in your mind as you
think about your part in the 1959 United Fund cam-
paign which opens Monday. And you might also con-
sider these additional facts:
The Denton County United Fund:
1. Provides a balanced approach to meeting all
health and welfare needs—not just the spectacular
and easily dramatised ones. <
2. Eliminates duplication in agency services through
a centralized budget control and a cooperative com-
munity approach to determining needs and rendering
services.
3 Enables agencies, relieved of time-consuming
'' fund-raising responsibilities as a major activity, to -i
devote more time of both their volunteers and staff to
program and service.
4. Eliminates the annoyance and confusion of sep-
arate and often competing campaigns.
5. Reduces the cost of fund-raising by consolidating
the cost of many appeals in a single operation.
6. Represents the giving pattern most acceptable
to most people in all Denton County communities for
the financing of local state and national health, youth ■
and welfare programs.
These are just some of the things all of us should
think over before a United Fund volunteer worker
calls.
