A year after a bond package failed
to earn voter approval, Goose Creek
CISD has proved going back to the
drawing board can be a good thing.
With a final unofficial vote count of
988 to 807, the district’s $335 million

Dempsey’s steer wasn’t the only
animal that won at the Baytown
Youth Fair.
The Reserve Champion Steer,
Blaise Richard, came in at 11,085
pounds and sold for $4,600.
But the auction also showcased
the talents of Baytown’s youth.
One, in particular, was Victoria
Walker Elementary fifth-grader
Melody McMurrey who won Grand
Champion in photography with a
photo of a bee on a peach blossom,
which she took in her family’s or-
chard.
“I’ve never got Grand Champion
on anything before, so it felt really
good,” Melody said. “I also raised
rabbit and got third place, which
was also exciting.”
Melody’s photo sold for $1,000
to Michelle Bitterly of Awards &
Engraving.

What began in the fall as
a curiosity has developed
into a full-fledged collapse
on the grounds of Robert E.
Lee High School. And there
is no solution in place.
Two fences currently pro-
tect students and curious
onlookers from a sinkhole
on the football and soccer
practice fields. The hole has
grown since the fall from
a minor annoyance into a
significant safety hazard.
And it continues to grow
as Goose Creek CISD, Har-
ris County and the City of
Baytown have worked to
develop whose responsibil-
ity the pipe and repairs fall
on. The pipe is a floodwa-
ter conveyance pipe that is
60-to 72-inches in diameter
deep in the ground.
“My current understand-
ing is that the flood con-
trol division is currently
evaluating how to repair
the culvert failure which
has resulted in the sink-
hole,” Goose Creek CISD
Superintendent Dr. Randal
O’Brien said. “I am hope-
ful that these repairs may
be done soon.”
Just determining it was
a culvert took some work
that involved some back-
ground work on Google

“The initial problem
was trying to figure out
what was causing the
collapse,” Public Works
