Denton Negro
A 17-year-old Negro youth was
injured — though not seriously —
Saturday morning when the pick-
up truck he was driving left the
road and sheared off two gas
meters.
The youth, Jessie Davis of 526
E Mill Street, was driving in the
1100 block of Morse Street when
he lost control of the car.
Denton Patrolmen Carroll Sha-
han and Merle Calvert said Davis
was driving a little too fast for
the dirt road. He hit two culverts
and came to rest against the gas
meters, they said.
Davis was taken to Flow Me-
morial Hospital for X-rays by a

Selection of Denton came after
consideration of many factors, he
said.
He noted that Denton is 88 miles
northwest of Dallas and 37 miles
northeast of Fort Worth. That is
considered outside the Hkely de-
structive range of a nuclear at-
tack on those two cities, which are
considered key target pointe be-
cause of aircraft and other defense
manufacturing plants in the area.
COLLEGE CITY
He also noted that as a college
eity, Denton would have housing
and office space available for a
possible large influx of other gov-
ernment officials, while profes-
sors and students would serve as
ideal reservoirs for the kind of per-
sonnel which might be needed.
Discussions by OCDM officials
about Denton disclosed that some
federal agencies may be trans-
ferred to that city because of Its
Civil Defense operations The
Roads ‘Bureau, headquarters in
Fort Worth is one mentioned for
possible transfer.

The lower level would be used
for emergency sleeping, mechani-

like), storage and additional office

In the event of an emergency,
the Denton OCDM force under the
direction of Region 5 Director
Welcome Wilson would be in radio
and teletype communication with
all other civil defense beadquar-
ters
"The chain of command is set
up " Hoegh said, "so that Region
5 headquarters at Denton would
take over as the first alternate in
event national headquarters is
knocked out."
WIGR PERSONNEL
He said that from one to five
highly able and responsible per-
sonnel from virtually all federal
agencies and departments will be
on hand in the Denton under-
ground shelter after It gets into
operation.
A tentative scheduling provides
that in an emergency, with a 500
man compliment on hand, the Wel-
fare Department (which includes
the Public Health Service) would
have 23 persons on hand. Interior
Department (Reclamation, Indian
tod other bureaus) 22, Labor 10,
Veterans Administration 12, Com-
merce 14, Agriculture 10, Treasury
8. Amont those with fewer repre-
sentatives would be the defense
department, listed for 3, to help
coordinate matters with the armed
forces operations.
ROUGH PATH
The legislative path of the ap-
propriation for the Denton shelter
was not a smooth one.
The House Appropriations sub-
committee which handled the sup-
plemental bill was urged by House
majority leader John McCormack
(D-Mass) to provide money for a
shelter in Harvard, aa well aa for
Denton. It complied and wrote
four million dollars into the bill.
The full committee deleted the
entire amount, apparently figuring
that since that sum greatly ex-
ceeded the budget bureau's rec
ommendation of $2.700 000 the
President might disapprove of the
whole thing.
Texans backing the Denton pro-
ject decided the best tact would
he to make no effort to get the
Denton item resored on he House
floor but to direct their appeal to
the Senate. So, it was put back
in when the Senate Appropriations
Committee considered the meas-
ure. The Senate backed up its
