if you are a golfer there’s no
reason to forsake your pastime
just because you are coming to
Denton. Four 18 - hole golf cours-
es and a driving range are in Den-
ton — enough to satisfy even the
most adamant golfer.
Two of the golf courses are a
little small for a wood — they're
miniature courses. But the two full-
size courses offer just about as
tough a challenge as you can find
on any course in the Southwest.
The courses are both owned by
the colleges — NTSC’s is located
in western Denton just south of
the new Interstate Highway 35 ex-
pressway — just a few blocks from
the main campus.
The TWU course is located on
the northeast side of the city, south
of Highway 24.
MINIATURE COURSES
The two miniature courses are
divided into the northern and south-
ern parts of the city. Knobby
Knolls is located on Fort Worth
Drive in Southern Denton and Oak
Grove is located at 2720 N. Elm
in the city's northern sector.
The full - size courses were de-
signed primarily for student use,
but are open to the public. If you
are an NTSC student you can play
on the TWU course and if you are
a TWU student you can play on
the NTSC course. And if you aren't
a student at either college you can
still play on either course — al-
though it will cost you a little more
at NTSC.
At the NTSC course, a student
may play during the week for 25
cents a day. On weekends the toll

guests.
Right now there are two golf
tournaments in Denton—the Byron
Nelson Memorial Tournament is
held each year on the TWU course.
And the Fred Cobb memorial in
held at NT.
Denton's courses have turned out
some of the best golfers in the
country. Among them are Nelson,
Don January, Harold Sexton, Ray
Ferguson and Dick Whetzle.

their fans with either district
champions or championship con-
tenders for many years. Last year,
for instance. Coach Vern Lane’s
charges were co-champions in the
tough District 7-AAAA loop race,
losing out as district representa-
tives in post - season play to co-
champion Garland in a three-game
playoff.
But Denton High isn't the only
school with a good basketball rec-
ord. Take, for instance, Krum, Pon-
dor, Slidell. Sanger. Era, Valley
View and Celina. These points fur-
nish top-notch basketball. Krum,
Ponder and Slidell spend all their
winter energies on basketball and
try to compete in football.
Of the lot. Krum and Slidell
seem to consistently show the best
teams in competition. There's quite
a rivalry going in that part (west)

rises to 50 cents for students. It
costs a non - student 50 cents dur-
ing the week and $1 on weekends
and holidays. Par for the 6,237
yard course is 70. There is a two-
bole water hazard on the course.
At the TWU course — which is
5,000 yards long — the non - stu-
dent fee is 75 cents on weekdays
and $1 on weekends and holidays.
TWU girls are permitted to tour
these links free. Par is 71, there
are four water hazards and a 10
acre practice field. Both courses
have putting greens.
A monthly membership card
may be purchased at either course.
The rate at NTSC is $2 per month
for students and $4 a month for
non - students. A card costs $4 at
TWU.
The miniature courses both use
a similar rate system. If you play
miniature golf in the afternoon, it’s
cheaper than at night.
Both courses charge 25 cents dur-
ing the day, but Knobby Knolls
raises its toll to 35 cents after 5
p.m. The same rates apply at the
Oak Grove course, but the time for
the changeover is sunset.
The miniature courses naturally
have putters and balls available
for the use of patrons at no addi-
tional charge.
DRIVING RANGE
Denton’s driving range, located
on Dallas Drive, is just the place
for the golfer who wants to get in
a little practice or for the duf-
fer who wants to learn to hit the
ball.
And if you are • baseball fan,

NORTH TEXAS AND GOLF
ARE REALLY SYNONYMS
In 10 seasons of play, the name of college golf and
North Texas State have taken on the characteristics o
synonyms.
For in that span since 1939, with two war years miss-
ing, the Eagles have won 80 per cent of their dual
matches, a mark unequaled by any other sport on the

ships, including the national collegiate (NCAA) titles
for four consecutive years from 1949 to 1952. Seven

by Herb Ferrill, who’s also line coach for the football
team.
. The 1959 links season was an unusual one for the
college in that the team didn’t win a single tourna-
ment victory. The golfers did, however, win eight
of their 14 dual matches, topping such opponents as
Southern Methodist University, Texas Wesleyan, Zay-
lor, Oklahoma, Tulsa A&M and the University of Texas. •
Among players returning for 1960 action, two have
been especially outstanding. Bill Eschenbrenner and
a stroke average of 73.3 in regular season play and was
the top performer for his team in the Missouri Valley
Conference tournament, finishing five strokes behind
the winder. Rives McBee, just a sophomore in 1959,
had a 73.7 stroke average and the team’s best match
play mark of 9-6-1.

There is another golf course in
Denton — at the Denton Country
Club — that has fallen into disre-
pair because of a lack of upkeep.
Rumors are that the course is to
get a new facelifting soon and be

gyms in the area are teams from
Dallas, Fort Worth, Bowie, Sher-
man, Denison and Bonham.
Aside from the chance to see
regular schedules jammed with
fine basketball, the Denton area
basketball fans also have the op-
portunity to see some post-season
games. NTSC always plays host to
at least one regional tournament,
usually many more than that This
gives the fan a chance to view
brands of basketball played in
many other parts of the state be-
sides North Texas. Some of those
teams might even be hometown
teams of a lot of Denton college

the teams from Slidell. Krum and

three, seem to be perennial strong
threats for the championship in the
district which embraces them all.
Lewisville and Pilot Point in
Denton County also offer good
basketball fare, as do Decatur.
Bridgeport and Alvord in Wise
County, and Prosper in Collin
County. In fact, basketball fans
can find first - rate action any
where in Denton County and the
surrounding counties. The schools
mentioned not only offer top-notch
basketball but their opponents are
always top drawer, thus making
