. At Lewisville, 18 miles south of
Denton on U.S. Highway 77, the
business of winning football games
to a matter of utmost serious-
ness. The Farmers this year
also will be guided by a new
coach. He’s Ben Hannon, for
seven years head football coach at
Class A Itasca. The Farmers had
their worst record in many sea-
sons last year, but, nonetheless
finished second to powerhouse Bon-
ham to a tough, new league.
The Farmers compiled a 5-4
mark last season, but three of the
losses were administered by even-
tual district champions, one of
which reached the quarterfinals in
the state playoffs. Even so, the
Lewisville gridders will be out to
what could be one of the most in-
teresting schedules of any place in
the far . flung North Texas area.
Spurred on by a new coach, By-
ron Gillory, who promises an in-
teresting, wide open attack, the
Broncos will play host this year
to six opponents in Bronco Sta-
dium to Denton
Heading the list, of course, is
Dallas Highland Park, 1957 state
champion and semifinalist last
year before bowing to the even-
tual state kingpin, Wichita Falls.
The Scotsmen, although losing a
few stalwarts, still will be laden
with outstanding players who are
steeped in the tradition of win-
ning. The Highlanders will more
than likely get the pre - season
nod as the team to beat to Dis-
trict 7-AAAA.
Also on the home schedule are

The Eagles thus have nine of
their top 10 scorers back on the
One of the bright spots last year
was the emergence of a junior col-
lege transfer, 6-foot-7 Jim Mudd,
as an outstanding scorer. In Mis-
sour Valley games, he was second
to point production only to Cin-
cinnati’s great All - American, Os-
car Robertson.
MORE STRENGTH
In the year ahead Coach Shands
looks for additional scoring
strength to develop alongside that
of Mudd. He hopes this can come
especially from Bill McLaughlin, a
e-foot-4 junior forward, and Tom
Grissom, a 6-foot-5 jumping jack
who lettered on the track team as
a high jumper and hurdler. He’s
also a junior

In Tough
MVC Action
Two years ago, the North
Texas tate Eagles plunged
into the middle of the nat-
ion’s toughest basketball lea-
gue, the Missouri Valley Con-
ference.
What they encountered can best
be described as a baptism by
fire, for when the season was over
they emerged with bgt a single
conference victory and only three
for the entire year.
Then in 1968-59 they doubled
those figures, winning a pair of
MVC contests and six for the
whole season And their defeats
) came by significantly smaller mar-
gins than those of the year before.
OVERTIME
Whereas the North Texans had
faced a humiliating 127-457 trounc-
ing by Cincinnati in 1958, they
forced the Bearcats, one of the
nation’s greateat teams, into over-
time before bowing in 1959. -
For the 1959-60 season ahead.
Coach H. G. (Pete) Shands can
look forward to an even more ex-
perienced squad with the valuable
background of working together
