WASHATERIA
This well known laundry
is located at 808 S. CADDO
in CLEBURNE, Phone MI-5-
4970.
It is no longer necessary
for the busy housewife to
try to launder her clothes
with inefficient methods and
poor equipment when there
are such up-to-date home
laundries as this one for her
to use. When you bring your
clothes here to wash them
you can be assured that they
will be washed in soft water
that will get them clean re-
gardless of how dirty they
might be. You will not only
find that your wash day is
made much easier but it will
take less time as well.
The MODERN WASHA-
TERA has made it their bus-
iness to make washing a
pleasure instead of the dru-
gery it used to be. They
maintain a cheerful atmos-
phere in their establishment
where you can sit down and
relax or read while you are
waiting if you care to.
Here you will find plenty
of hot water, good machines
and supplies on hand if you
run out. You will find that
it costs so little to do a
week’s washing that you can-
not afford to do your laun-
dry at home with inefficient
methods. If during bad wea-
ther you find drying clothes
a problem this modern laun-
dry provides a drying service
for yor convenience.
Be sure to do your next
washing here and you will
want to become a regular
customer.

Austin, February 20, Soon
lakes in northern Texas will
start their mysterious action
of turning over, to be follow-
ed in late summer by lakes
throughout the rest of Tex-
as. This curious shifting of
lake waters, which causes
odors noticed by all neigh-
bors' and visitors to the lake,
is explained by Biologist
Kenneth Jurgens in the Feb-
ruary issue of Texas Game
And Fish, the official publi-
cation of the Texas Game
and Fish Commission.
Why Do Lakes Turn Over ?
launches its answers with
winter and early spring sea-
sons when the most lake
water has even temperature
and good circulation, then
traces the lake’s changes
through the rest of the year.
For fishermen who have
found bloated fish floating
on top of the lake in sum-
mer, Jurgens explains the
stagnated biological desert
of the lower layer. He says
that these fish are so over-
come with poisonous gases
trapped near the lake bottom
that they shoot uncontroll-
ably to the surface and die.
The turnover, when layers
begin to blend and change
position, occurs as cooler
weather begins in late sum-
mer and early fall to chill the
surface water. Then the fish,
as well as the water, enjoy
free movement again.
Winter stagnation, anoth-
er oxygen-starved period for
north Texas lakes, is now
coming to an end. North
Texas lakes, Jurgens points
out, have two turnovers, but
other Texas lakes have only
the one following summer
stagnation.
Jurgens’s article provides
helpful background for fish-
ermen who need to know
when to fish and where, as
well as the answer to the of-
ten asked why of the lake’s
behavior.

which are the chief bass
food.
When bluegills stop spaw-
ning in the fall, the bass con-
tinue their heavy consump-
tion of bluegill fingerlings.
As the bass reduce the num-
ber of fingerlings, the adult
bluegills begin to grow—
slowly at first, then more
rapidly. Growth is slow again
during the colder days of
winter, as fish feed very lit-
tle in cold temperatures.
Then when the water be-
gins to warm a little, blue-
gills are ready to grow larg-
er; but only if the water is
fertile enough to grow a lot
of microscopic creatures that
are essential part of the food
cycle. A pond owner who
waits until late spring to re-
new his pond’s fertility can-
not expect big bluegills. The
season when they grow. most
rapidly is only 100 to 120
days, usually February to
June.
“To get the first 3 to 5
applications in quickly, fer-
tilize every week or 10 days
with 100 pounds of 8-8-2 per
surface acre as you begin
the year’s program of water
culture,” are the SCS in-
struction.” Fertilize until a
white object cannot be seen
12 to 14 inches deep.
Another tip for good fish
management—don’t just fish
bass. There is a lot of fun
and good eating in the fat
bluegills in the pond and it
keeps the pond in good con-
dition to fish for them. Many
ponds that get over populat-
ed with bluegills have not
been fertilized properly and
have never had enough blue-
gills caught. Bass fisihng
alone in a pond is not good
water management.

= OUR SOIL * OUR STRENGTHS
“To grow bluegills big
raise your ponds fertility
quickly, as soon as winter
cold begins to wane”, say
biologists of the Soil Conser-
vation Service. This is a most
significant fact that fish cul-
turists have learned by ex-
perience in recent years..
Pond fertilization was first
begun in America about
1938. For a time technicians
recommended delay in apply-
ing fertilizer “until the spr-
ing rains are over". Farmers
waited until May or June.
Hundreds were disappointed
because the bluegills quit
growing after the second
year. Now it has been shown
that even April Fertilization
is too late to obtain satisfac-
tory bluegill growth.
Bluegills begin to spawn
in May or June. Within two
or three weeks after the eggs
hatch, the thousands of lit-
tle bluegills are eating all the
spare food. When that hap-
pens their parents cannot
get enough to grow even
with full water fertility, yet
they continue to spawn all
summer and until the first
chilly nights in the fall, us-
ually October. During this
summer period the produc-
tion of bass is high. They
are growing rapidly on the
thousands of little bluegills
