legislation.
..While the Teague resolu-
tion was not binding under
law, it clearly showed the
sense of Congress on the
issue, and put considerable
pressure on the Postal Ser-
, vice to seek other means
of cutting costs without re-
ducing postal service to the
rural areas.
Teague said he was ex-
tremely pleased at the ac-
tion and wants the rural
, post offices to remain open
permanently.
The state jobless picture remains relatively stable,
according to Texas Employment Commission
Chairman Harold K. Dudley who said that prelimi-
nary estimates show an unemployment rate of 5.3 per
cent for May.
“We have anticipated for some time that the unem-
ployment rate would decline slowly if at all when it
neared the 5 per cent mark,” Dudley said. “Only a
hyperheated economy would be likely to drive it much
lower. I don’t expect it to reach, in the near future, the 3
or 4 per cent level of prerecession days.”
Revised figures, showed Texas’ unemployment rate
for April as 5.3 per cent, the same as the May estimate.
(An earlier forecast for April was 4.8 per cent, but a
change in methods of computation by the Bureau of
Labor Statistics placed the official state rate at 5.3
per cent.)
Preliminary estimates, subject to later revision, •
show 288,600 Texans unemployed in May, with a state
work force numbering 5,106,000, Dudley said. Employ-
ment was up in retail trade and in the service indus-
tries, particularly in hotels, motels, and amusement
parks, with a decline occuring in school-connected
employment and in transportation services.
“Texas continues to fare better than the nation as a
whole,” Dudley noted. “The national unadjusted
jobless rate for May is 6.7 per cent, a full 1.4 per cent
above the Texas rate.”
