Dr. W. Grace the most famous
cricketer in England probably has
givea his autograph as often as any
other celebrity. At a match 'not
long ago he wrote his name in th.
notebook of a little girl. A couple
of weeks later much to his sur-
prise the same little lady shyly
sidled up to him with the necessary
document and the request for his
autograph. "But I gave it to you
only a few days ago" laughingly
said the veteran. "Oh" came the
answer "I changed that one for
two bishops." Dr. Grace laughed
heartily as he replied: "Well my
dear if a cricketer is worth two
bishops I don't believe I ought to
ffive-you another autograph. But
your naivete is so delicious I sup-
pose I must. So there you are.
Ate His Whisky.
"Well" said one of the story
tellers "I've seen a. lot of funny
stunts done in hotelsand barrooms
but I ran against the limit the
other day iu one of the joints in
West street. I was standing at the
bar with a long cold one in front
of me when a little old man with
a black felt hat and and an up-
country appearance came in and
ordered whisky.
"He poured out a big drink
glass almost full then walked to
the lunch counter and took a hand-
ful of bread. He soaked the bread
in tne whisky and ate it with
every evidence or enjoyment. 1
have since wondered if he really
liked it or if he had sworn off
drinking whisky and tried to fool
his conscience by eating it."

Mary had a little mule;
Its feet were never slow
And everywhere that Mary went
The mule was sure to go.
It followed her to school one day
Which was against the rule
(However this contrary way
Is noticed in each mule).
It made the children laugh and shout
To see him wag his cars
And innocently look about
At all the little dears.
The teacher tried to send him forth
She struck him once that's all;
I he teacher then soared east by north.
And tore out half the wall.
The pupils shouted loud at that
His mulcship did not stop
But old and young thin and fat
He kicked out of thejshop
But Mary gentle little soul
Escaped into the yard
With skin and bono; ami garment
whole
The mule he wait hur pard
And then the mule iu lively glee
Swung wildly with each hoof
And in a spreading chestnut troe
Deposited thefoof.
Continuing he kicked the books
And desks and wall and floor
Until the distant forest nooks
The schoolhousc debris wore.
Sweet peace then settled on the scene.
And from the county line
The teacher's voice came quite serene;
"I think I shall resign."
Why did the mule love Mary so?
Why Mary was real kind
She also knew his traits you know
And never stood behind.
