of Kort Brown for having that
thoroughfare thoroughly sprinkled.
The clouds of dust that emnnnted
.from this particular locality have
bucn almost stifling and it is a
great relief to have the street

George Meiners who has been
for some time employed at the
pumping station of the Browns-
ville Land & Irrigation company
arrived in Brownsville last night
from a short visii to Monterey
accompanied by his sou Karl.
Mr. Meiners reports J. W Buch-
anan ns getting along very nicely
and will soon return home much
improved hi health by reason of
his vaoatiou hi Mexico.
Two gentlemen arrived in
Brownsville yesterday afternoon
from Laredo coming all the way
by boat. They were Messrs.
James Hughes and Geo. Morgan
mechanics who decided to spend
a few days hunting and fishing
along the Rio Grande. To make
the trip more original they se-
cured a skiff and came down the
river arriving here last evening
after having been on the way for
thirteen days. Notwithstanding
their journey occupied the un-
lucky number of thirteen days it
was made without mishap and the
gentlemen report a very pleasant
time on the way.
The Herald acknowledges a
pleasant call from Sam Harmon
of Humble Texas. Mr. Harmon
informs us he and several others
have organized a company to be
known as the Hidalgo Onion
Growers association and they will
purchase land and engage in the
raising of onion in Hidalgo county.
The farm will be in direct charge
of J. W. Abernathy one of the
promoters who will be allowed a
certain sum monthly for mainte
nance.
A letter has been received by
County Judge Bartlett from Gov-
ernor Vardeman of Mississippi
in which he states active steps are
being taken to apprehend those
who assisted in the lynching of
Dionicio Esparza son of Roman Es-
parza of Brownsville an account
of which appeared in The Herald
some weeks ago. It is not known
why the young man was lynched
and when the news reached here it
was a great shock to his family
and friends as he had always borne
a good reputation in Brownsville
where he was born and lived up to
the time he went to Mississippi.

Low C. Hill left this morning
for a short business trip to Bee-
villc and other points. .
Attorney Frank C. Pierce went
up to Sarita on the morning train
on short business visit.
Judge J. B. Wells and F. W.
Kibbe left yesterday fan- a few days
stay at the Wells ranch.
George Kenedy and Philip Scan-
land were among the outgoing
passengers on the morning trniu.
George W Carter of Browns-
ville is in the city a guest of the
Southern hotd. San Antonio Ex-
press Aug. 14.
A Jacobs a drummer from Snn
Antonio is displaying his samples
in the ctyy today having arrived
yesterday afternoon.
County Commissioner E. B. Ray-
mond left for home this morning af-
ter spending a day in town in
attendance upon commissioners
court.
District Attorney John I. Klciber
returned yesterday afternoon from
a several days visit with his family
who are spending the summer at
Corpus Christi.
C. F. Carter a Houston commer-
cial traveler arrived in the city at
3:45 yerternny afternoon transact-
ed business and was an outgoing
pnssanger this morning.
W. L. Bingaman the rustling
piano salesman for the well known
music house of Thos. Goggan &
Bios. arrived in the city last night
and is talking pianos with his ac-
customed eloquence.
Fred W. Truwit the National
Biscuit company man who has
been shaking hands with old friends
and taking orders for his goods in
Brownsville the past day or two
was among the outgoing passengers
this morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Santa Anna Ruth-
erford of Memphis Tcnu. who
are spending some time at Kings-
ville with W. J. Carnohan and
family and who visited Browns-
ville a day or two left this morn-
ing for Kingsville.
Dr. Layton returned from the
quarantine station at Padre Island
this morning and reports that the
boat which was said to be coming
from New York to Point Isabel
with a party of tourists did not
show up at all and had probably
changed its course and gone else-

A Moonlight Sail.
One of those delightful events
which makes life seem one long
holiday took place at the Point
last night. A jolly party or Browns-
ville young people chartered a spe-
cial train at 6 o'clock yesterday af-
ternoon and proceeded to the sea-
shore where the Juanita was en-
gaged for a sail on the bay by
moonlight. The moon seemed to
shine with added brightness in
honor of the occasiou and pleasure
was uncon fined. Those who went
down ou the special were as fol-J

island and a stroll on the moonlit
shore were two features of the out-
ing which were highly enjoyed.
Dainty refreshments were served
and all went merry. The special
returned to Brownsville about 2
o'clock this morning bearing a
happy iarty home perhaps to
dream of the glorious sail and its
attendant pleasures.
