A BATTLE FOR TRADE.
Lively Contest of Rival Manufacturers In
Japan Ingenious Advertising Meth-
ods and Competition Sharp.
A good story coines to the Unit
ed States concerning a vigorous
contest that is being carried on
between rival manufacturers o
cigarettes in Japan says W. W.
Price the Colombia (S. C.) Re
cord's Washington correspondent.
The ingenuity of Japanese man
ufacturers in advertising their
product will be found interesting.
Cigarettes from American grown
tobacco are being advertised there
with colored quarter sheet posters
and handbills. The coloring of
the advertising matter is most
blood red and the cigarette cam
. paign is growing more active every
day. The Japanese tobacco raonopo
ly on the one hand is pushing
three leading brands in Manchuria
while the British-American Tobac-
co company on the other has its
agents knocking at the gates lead
ing to the late war zone and seek
ing to carry the campaign into the
interior on equal terms. Thus
.far the British-American company'
has not been allowed to send
foreigners - beyond Newchwang
but through native subagents the
virtues of the Virginia leaf are
already being announced on the
face of old Chinese walls that have
never before been utilized' for ad-
vertising purposes. The Japanese
bave the advantage of being able
to push their goods under the
direct supervision of their own
. countrymen. Japanese merchants
also who sell to the army have
for sevcal months been allowed to
go into the interior to certain
points under Japanese military
authority and regulation.
In Manchuria the natives in
some instances women smoke
cigarettes. The field is considered
a rich one in this trade and is
consequently sought after with
much eagerness. The lurid adver-
tising matter used by both parties
seeking the business of the enor-
mous cigarette smoking community
is decorated with Chinese charac-
ters describing the wonderful
qualities of the tobacco used.
Pictures of the exact size and the
distinguishing marks of the pack-
ages used are printed on the pla-
cards. The British American
company makes a feature of the
quality of the Virginia leaf that
is used. The leaf is imported
from America and manufactured
into cigarettes at Shanghai. The
Japanese tobacco monopoly puts
its goods on this market under
Chinese labels but gives the names
of its chief brands in English on
the package. This method is the
one adopted by its active rival.
A few days ago the British-
American managers at Newchwang
which is headquarters for Man-
churia billed the native city as
prominently as a great circuses
announced on billboards Follow-
ing this the Japanese tobacco mo-
nopoly managers begin giving
away sample cigarettes attached to
a neat card having Chinese and
Japanese flags printed on top
with real matches for fiagstaffs
and with nuniature pictures of the
boxes of their leading brands in
pyramid fprms under the flags.
Holes punched into the cards ad-
mitted and held the sample cigarettes.
The British-American company
has Chinese speaking foreigners in
charge of its campaigns in Man-
churia and a house to house can-
vass is now going on. Competi-
tion is sharp and- all kinds of
queer devices are being resorted to
by both the sellers of American
and native tobacco to get their
goods "on the "market and promi-
nently before the people. House
boats carry their entire sides pla-
carded with the virtues of different
brands of tobacco and in many
cemeteries large signs printed on
cloth and swung from toirib to
tomb display the excellence of
different makes.
The agents of the Japanese
government tobacco monopoly in
advertising their goods in Man
churia declare that their cigarette
"administers life" "supports the
spirits" "this cigarette of govern-
ment manufacture is sweet and of
good quality famous once tried
always to be liked;" "will cause
the smoker to feel as if in a dream
like unto the mountain Wooshan."
American manufacturers of leaf
tabacco will reap good harvests
while this war is on in the east.

Let Justice be Done.
No other one agency has done
more in the past or is now doing
more for Southwest Texas than the
railroads which traverse its vast
territory. They do this not from
motives of philanthropy or patriot
ism but from thqt which actuates
us all self-interest. No business
more quickly feels the blight of
hard times or recovers from it
more slowly than that of the rail
roads. In such times trains must
run the track and equipment kept
in order and the employes paid.
But travel ceases in great measure
less freight is carried and the rev
enue shrinks till taxes and other
expenses absorb it all: dividends
are out of the question and receiv-
erships and ruin quickly follow.
Good feeling between the people
and the railroads and such feel-
ing is growing would be con
ducive to the prosperity of all and
would dethrone many a demagogue
as well. Few if any laws favor
the railroads and exact justice
under the law should be given
them. Sympathy for the injured
party we naturally feel but that
should no more influence a jury in
a damage suit than sympathy for
the innocent wife and children of a
criminal should influence a jury to
mitigate the justice meted out to
him. This is right not only that
it is to the best interest of society
that only strict justice unmixed
with sympathy or prejudice should
prevail in our courts. Corpus

300000 Volts Do Not Hurt Him.
.New York. Sending wireless
messages through a human body
lighting an incandescent lamp by
using only one wire transmitting
power without wires melting metal
wire with currents passing through
a human body and sending strong
currents through two inches of
solid glass were a few of many
interesting experiments with elec-
tricity made in a dbncert hall of
Madison Square Garden recently-
Prof. Earle L. Oviugton of Boston
was the wizard.
To those not having technical
knowledge of electricity perhaps
the most interesting feature of
Prof. Ovington's demonstration
was the sending of current through
his body a hundredfold more
powerful than those used in putting ;
"men to death in Sing Sing. About
seven thousand volts is used to
cause death while Prof. Ovington
sent 300000 through his body.
The only danger he said was in
a reduction of the current.

Letter to Jno. McGovern.
Brownsville Texas.
Dear Sir: A gallon saved is $4
or $5 earned. Devoe save 2 or 3
gallons in 10. How much is it
worth a gallon?
A gallon saved saves the 'point-
ing too; and .both together cost
$4 or $5 $4 where labor is cheap;
$5 where labor is dear.
Our agents in Bridgeport Conn
Hubbell & Wade Co tell us:
"There are a great many working-
men's houses here. They used to
paint iead-and-oil and take ten
gallons. We have been selling
them ten gallons Devoe lead and-
zinc and have had in every in-
stance two gallons returned."
The proportion is often higher
than that: we have known it five
ia ten; but that is exceptional.
This is the explanation: Devoe
is erround bv machinery and is
ground fine; lead-and-oil is mixed
by hand and isn't ground at all.
Yours truly

A Seaside Frog.
One fine summer's day a coun-
try youngster was taken with his
father for the first time in his life
to the seaside. On going along
the shore he noticed a crab crawl-
ing along.
He at once called his father.s
attention to it; exclaiming "Oh!
dada did you notice that frog
going under that big stone."

for sometime with a sharp pain in
the small of my back. It would
come on without the slightest warn
ing and the secretions from the
kidneys were'scant and accompan-
ied with pain. I procured a box
of Doan's Kidney Pills as I was
told that they were a valuable rem-

that they did me a lot of good
correcting the action of the kidney
secretions and causing the pair in

pleasure in recommending them to
