tribution this morning was sixteen

fortunate sections.
Plans are being prepared for
considerable repairs and improve-
ment in the Miller Hotel. The
contemplated repairs have not been
definitely agreed upon yet but the
sum of $2000 or $3000 will be ex-
pended in making this hostelry
more confortable for guests.

The Herald acknowledges a
pleasant call by P. R. McNeil of
Santa Maria this moruinc. Mr.
McNeil is interested in the Santa
Maria Irrigation company and says
everything is lovely in his vicinity.
He complains of an excess of rain
in his territory which has retard
ed work to a certain extent. The
gentleman says they have some
forty acres of onions out and also
nice fields of sorghum and alfalfa
for forage crops.
Gen. Wra.S. McCaskey U. S
A. commanding the department of
the Colorado arrived in Browns-
ville last evening accompanied by
Mrs. McCaskey and his son Lieut
Garrison McCaskey aide de camp
to Gen. Jesse M.. Lee. The party
has been traveling in Mexico
and are on their return trip com
ing to Brownsville to renew ac
quaintance a with section to which
General McCaskey is no stranger
having been stationed here six
years trom lua to lasi. A
salute of fifteen guns was fired
at Fort Brown this morning in
honor of General McCaskey and a
reception will be held this after-
noon at the quarters of Major H.
L- Roberts commanding officer at
Fort Brown from 4:30 to 5:30 at
which Gen. McCaskey hopes to
renew acquaintances made during
his six years stay in the Browns-
ville country.

among yesterday's incoming passengers.
P. R. McNeil arrived in the city
yesterday from Santa Maria on
business.
J. S. Graham traveling auditor
of the Gulf Coast Line spent last
night in Brownsville.
Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Still-
mau ot ban Antonio arrived in
the city yesterday afternoon -
W. P. Gano who has been in
the city several days returned to
his home at Sarita this morning.
Mrs. D. A. Scrivner aud Miss
Scrivner of Rockport arrived in
the city on yesterday's afternoon
train.
E. R. Jefferds customs inspector
at Hidalgo arrived in Brownsville
yesterday and is greeting old
friends.
Robt. H. and J. A. L. Waddell
of Kansas City were among the
passengers coming in yesterday af
ternoon.
Mrs. A. T. Woodhouse is in the
city from the ranch to spend the
holida3rs and is the guest of Mrs.
M. B. Woodhouse.
D. G. Wood of Olmito spent
ast night in the city. He left this
morning tor uimuo to spend
Christmas he said.
County Treasurer W. S. Dough
erty of Hidalgo is a visitor to
Brownsville arriving on the mid-
day train yesterday.
Mrs. Jno J Kleiber who has
been spending the summer in the
orth is expected to return to

Brownsville for the holidays.
Rev. and Mrs. A. W. S. Garden
are expected tomorrow from San
Antonio to spend the holidays with
Mrs. M. B. Woodhouse mother of
Mrs. Garden.
W. H. Dewey of Chariton Iowa
was among the arrivals yesterday
afternoon. He is a well known
newspaper man. being connected
with the Chariton Leader.

Brownsville arrived in the city
Saturday evening to spend holidays
the guests of Mrs. C. B. Kenedy.

W. O. Weller has returned Xo
Brownsville after a several months
absence a part of the time- being
spent in a painful tussle with
rheumatism. The young man
tells us he is now on the road to
recoveiTi and hopes to soon regain
his accustomed health.
Mr. and Mrs. E- K. Butler of
Chicago arrived in .the city yes-
terday from a tour of Mexico and
are the guests of Mesdames A. S.
Wolff and Blanche K. Loew- Mr.
Butler is heavily interested in the
Brownsville Land & Irrigation
company here.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Newman
of Bloomington Wisconsin are in
the city cn a visit to their daughter
Mrs. E. K. Goodrich and their
son B. D. Newman. They will
here several weeks. The Herald
extends a cordial welcome to these
good people and hopes their visit
may be a pleasant one.
G. T. Porter the popular St.
L- B. & M. station agent here
yesterday moved his. office to the
passenger depot where he is very
comfortably located for the transac-
tion of his company's business.
The location is more convenient
and commodious and we congratu-
late the officials on the change.
Mrs. S. C. Moore who has been
visiting her husband Mine Host
Moore of the Miller the past sev-
eral weeks left this morning for
Fort Worth for the holidays. Mrs.
Moore says she has never spent
Christmas away from her children
and does not think this a good
time to begin. She will return af-
ter the holidays.
20th Century Card Club.
The 20th Century Card club was
delightfully entertained by Miss
Lott yesterday afternoon. The
games were interestingly contested
and resulted in the following being
awarded prizes: Miss Beatrice
Hooks was the successful contest-
ant for first prize a beautiful cut-
glass vase while Mrs. J. L. Fai-
sans won second prize a handsome
Japanese cup and saucer.
Refreshments of cake and cream
were served and the afternoon was
most enjoyably spent. The club
will be entertained by Miss Beatrice
Hooks and Mrs. J. L. Faisans next
Wednesday afternoon at the resi-
dence of Mrs. Kelly.
Rev. G. G. Richards vicar of
St Peter and Paul's Teddington
England has issued a general
invitation to the men of his parish
to call at the vicarage on Monday
evening throughout the winter for
a friendly pipe and a chat."
