As A member of the committee
on foreign affairs Representative
Garner will be called on to shine
jfreauently in social functions of
indescribable splendor. It may be
a far crv from the chaparral to
ambassadorial drawing rooms but
who could make the leap with
'such exquisite grace as Garner?
Houston Post.
Our John is qualified to fill any
position or shine m any station;
but he knows little of chaparral
He was reared in Red River coun
ty where chaparal does notflourish.
He ouly went to West Texas a few
years ago since which time his
duty has lain chiefly in the court1
room and the legislative nail.
Alice Echo.
TheHonorableJohn can "shine"
whenever the occasion demands
and his lack of knowledge of cha-
paral will hardly have occasion to
be exploited to any great extent
in ambassadorial drawing rooms.
One of the Echo's correspond-
ents at Skidniore writes that J. D.
Autry is busy setting type for the
first paper to be printed at Skid-
more and that he has not decided
whether to call it the Skidniore
Signal or Skidmore Sentinel. We
fear our correspondent is not post-
ed on the past history of that
vimbryo city. If we are not mis-
taken Mr. Atkins established the
Skidmore Pioneer at that - place; if
he did not it Avas no doubt because
he overlooked it he started papers
at several out-of-the-way places.
And our friend Autry should not
select either of the names mention-
ed but should call the new paper
the Setting Sun because we think
there is no doubt that it will soon
"go down." For Mr- Autry's
sake we wish the chances for suc-
cess were brighter. Alice Echo.
It has often been said that in
every locality and in whatever
avocation there is always someone
upon whom the mantle of success
will fall and it may be that Autry
is the successful individual in this
instance. Tue Herald hopes so
at least. Because one man has
failed to make good in any parti-
cular line is that good and suffi-
cient reason why every other man
should keep out. We think not.
LOCAL ANDiPERSONAL
Fifty-five baskets of peas and ten
crates of tomatoes went out this ;
morning by express.
In olden times when a young
man caught a young lady under
the mistletoe lie was granted the
privilege of kissing her. Girls
get your mistletoe at Wise & New-
man's. The following marriage licenses
have been issued by the county
clerk the past few weeks: George
Sanchez und Maria de Lua; Ismael
Guerrero aud Serafina Garcia; San-
tiago Solis and Crescencia Treviiio;
Candido Solis and Cruz Guzman.
About one year ago two mules
were stolen from Louis Arismen-
dez at Olmito and carried to Beevi-
lle where they were disposed of.
Several days ago Ranger McKen-
zie arrested Aniceto Pisafia Lo-
renzo Recio aud Eduardo Lopez
who had their examining trial be-
fore Judge Gavito today and gave
bond in the sum of $250 each.
Ben T. Jordan of Victoria who
is connected with the United States
department of Agriculture arrived
in the city yesterday afternoon.
It will be remembered that colonies
of Guatemalan ants wnicn are
supposed to -be certain death to
the toll weevil were destributed
through various sections of Texas
some time ago one of which"
colonies was placed oh the farm of
Chas. Starck near Brownsville
Tlie object 'of Mr. Jordan's visit
is to ascertain the condition of
these auts. The gentleman is out
today investigating the question
and The Herald hopes to give
his report tomorrow.
Among today's outgoing passen-
gers was" noticed Dr. J. R. Hop-
kins of Atlanta Ga. who has
been in this section the past few
days to enjoy the sunshine. The
doctor did not feel that he had re-
ceived a'full quota of old Sol's rays
but the weather clerk seeming
somewhat out of humor the gentle
man feared another siege of damp"
weather and decided to return
home. Dr. Hopkins told a Her
ald representative at the train this
morning he was very much impress-
ed with possibilities in this sec-
tion and he confidently expects a
large measure of development in
the near future. The soil he says
impressed him as being exception-
ally rich and fertile and capable of
wonderful productiveness.

Green Is Highly Pleased
Btownsville Section
With
Anent the recent visit to this
section of Prof. E. C Green as-
sistant horticulturist rt A. & M
college the following dispatch from
Houston will be read with interest
by citizens of the Brownsville coun
try. Prof. Green says the Gar-
den spot" would not be complete
without the addition of
this terri
tOrr 3 fclCt
which The Herald
has set forth at various and sundry
times. In fact we believe this is
j the garden spot
' savs:
The dispatch
"Prof. E. C. Green of the Agri-
cultural and Mechanical college
was in the city yesterday evening
passing through from the Browns-
ville and Southwest coast country
to the college. About ten days
ago he passed through on his way
to that territory to make a general
examination of the experiment
efforts that had been inaugurated
there some two years ago in
which Mr. Robertson of Beeville
the experiment conductor of the
government was and is a great
worker. Prof. Green spent most
of his time on the trip at Browns-
ville Kingsville ana two other
places the four making an aver
age index of the soils and crops
produced down there. The rain
however was so excessive and the
lands so inundated or saturated
that a fair comparison with former
conditions could not be made suc-
cessfully. On this account the
statistic information excepted was
not obtainable. Mr. Green stated
in reply to questions that he had
not a full knowledge of the rich-
ness of the soil until this trip and
now he felt that there was some
as good land there as there is in
Texas. Speaking of the season
and the products of the soil he
stated that new garden truck such
asieets radishes peas and that
class were now ready to be placed
upon the market. His idea is that
the garden spot of Texas will have
to include that territory or it will
be incomplete. His views of that
section should be a great encour-
agement to the railroads as well
as the people living there or in-
terested in that section. In the
parlance of the railroad world the
climate gives Southwest Texas the
"right of way" over the othw
section."
