Tire Herald has been informed
the bull ring and amphitheatre at
Matamoros which was destroyed
by fire last Frida' night will be
rebuilt in the near future. The bull
fights were a great drawing card
for our sister city and the destruc-
tion of these facilities meant a
great loss to that city from a finan-
cial standpoint and also removed
the possibility of a sport which is
very popular in Mexico and has
large following from this side the
Rio Grande. The Herald would
be glad to learn the structures were
to be rebuilt at once.
Among the prominent arrivals iu
Brownsville is General Baldwin
division commander with head-
quarters at Denver Colorado ac-
companied by his aide Lieut.
Drum. General Baldwin is here
making his annual inspection at
Fort Brown. He is also accompan-
ied by two friends Messrs. W. W.
Price and H. T. Lowe prominent
business men of Colorado Springs
Col. they being down on a hunting
expedition. The eutire party will
spend several days here duck shoot-
ing and anticipate fine sport. A
salute of eleven guns was fired this
moniug in lienor of General Bald
win.
A benefit performance will
Brownsville" a two step which is
the most recent composition of
Sener Gutierrez and dedicated to
the two cities nameS.- The perform'
ance is eliciting much favorable
comment and will no doubt attract
a good audience from both sides
the river.
The residence of T. J. Hooks
in the western portion of the city
has been rented to P. -P. Landy
of Barker New York and F. H
Jiogue or unicago wno will oc
cupy it with their families in the
near future. Mr. Hooks -we learn
will move his family to La Blanca
plantation soon. While The HER'
ald is pleased to welcome Messrs
Hogue and Landy to our city we
are very sorry to lose Mr. Hooks
and family and hopes their ab
sence will only be temporary.
Consul P. Merrill Griffith and
wife entertained a party of friends
Christmas evening at their charm-
ing home in Matamoros- The invit-
ed guests partook of a tempting
dinner the table being beautifully
decorated and bountifully provided
with the good xhings of life after
which music and conversation made
up a delightful evening. Mr. and
Mrs. Griffith received the guests with
that charming grace and hospitality
for which they are famous. Those
present were Col. and Mrs. Lott
Miss May Lott Miss Edith Foster
J. W. Buchanan Rev. R- H. Wooo
ward Senor Gutierrez and Camp-
bell Hardy.
So far no accidents have been
reported to mar the Christmas
festivities. The usual amount of
fireworks were discharged with
its full complement of noise ana
fun but nobody was hurt ver3r
badly. If some of the boys grew
a little hilarious the Christmas
season was credited with the un-
usual exuberance and much could
be overlooked. If perchance a
firecracker of extra demensions
was discharged too neaf some of
our citizens to be comfortable the
start of surprise and anger soon
gave place to a smile when it was
remembered that it was Christmas
time when the reins of authority
are suppossed to hang looseb'.
Altogether the Christmas "season
has been a most pleasant one and
thoroughly enjoyed even by the
stranger within our gates.
A pleasant bit of news to many
in Erovvnsville is that of the recent
appointment of Dr H. K. Loew
formerly of Brownsville to the im-
portant post of assistant bacteriol-
ogist of the city of Hartford
Conn. Dr. Loew being a Browns-
ville boy the news of his advance-
ment in his chosenx profession is
welcome indeed to his numerous
friends in his old home. The doc-
tor now holds two advantageous
positions in Hartford the other be-
ing that of assistant gynecologist
for StFraucisco hospital in Hart-
ford. For one so young both in
years and in the practice of medi-
cine he has made unusual strides
and bids fair 10 achieve quickly the
eminence ana success wmcn nib
friends have hoped for. The Her-
ald congratulates Dr. Loew most
heartily and also extends felicita-
tions to his mother Mrs. Blanch
K. Loew of this city for the honor
bestowed upon her son.
