Municipal election to
be decided Saturday
Saturday, April 29, began cloudy
and quiet for Rains County. As the
day slowly drew to a close, alerts
starting coming through to people’s
phones and emails. According to
reports from multiple news organiza-
tions, a tornado had touched down
in Van Zandt County causing several
deaths and massive damage, and the
tornado was headed to Emory. Those
alerts people received on their phones
and in their emails were from the

As many as seven confirmed tornadoes ripped through Rains and Van Zandt counties Saturday evening, April 29. In Rains County, the path of destruction began in the southern
part of the county where it passed Greene’s Lake and the Willow Springs Church. The destruction continued northeasterly where it tore through Bear Creek Estates leveling
homes and uprooting trees.

Today, Tuesday, May 2, is the last day
to vote in early voting for elections in the
cities of East Tawakoni (ET) and Emory.
ET City Hall and Emory City Hall are
open until 4:00 p.m. for voting. Regular
election day will be held on Saturday,
May 6, from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. at each
city hall.
In ET, all city council seats are open
for election, as well as the mayoral seat.
However, incumbents Mayor Johnnie
LaPrade, Gary Reeves (Place 2), Chris
Roberts (Place 3) and Pam Patterson
(Place 4) are running unopposed.
Robin McPeters and Lynn Wallace
are running for Place 5 on the city coun-
cil, currently held by Councilman David
Evans who is not seeking re-election.
Incumbent James Lee is being challenged
by David Rose for his Place I council
seat.
For the City of Emory, the mayoral
seat is up for election as well as city
council seats Place 2 and Place 4. Cur-
rent mayor, Blake Cooper, was elected
to serve the last year of an unexpired
term, and now faces challenger Trey Hill.
Place 2 incumbent Travis Potts is seek-
ing re-election and Landon Williams is
running for the seat against him; Place 4
incumbent Emery Cathey is also seeking
re-election with Kay Fletcher running for
the seat as well.
