A good thing about the earlier
starting of the Brownsville train is
that the regulation number of loaf-
ers at the depot grounds has great-
ly diminished; it is evidently too
early for them to turn out.

tions enjoy the most delicious re-
freshments take part in the most
entertaining games and have the
best time you've had this year.

tunity to meet your friends in a
social way at the Hallowe'en party.
The young ladies in charge of the
affair have worked hard to make it
a success and it is hoped a goodly

Prof. Candler reports that there
are one hundred cases of sickness
in the school; at the beginning of
the epidemic the attendance drop-
ped to S3 per cent and this month
further9 reduced to SO per cent
which per ceutage shows that not
all the sickness prevailing is of
serious enough nature to keep the
. children out of school.
A delightful surprise farewell
party in honor of O. J. Matlock
was given Saturday night by a
party of his friends at the home of
Mrs. F. J. Fink. A few hours were
passed pleasantly by the party
playing "pitch" Herman Schrei-
ber winning first prize a box of
stationery and Frank Fink con-
solation prize a package of candy;
delicious refreshments of turkey
sandwiches lemonade cake and
bonbons. The night was ideal and
the affair a very pleasurable one.
from postmaster anarpe we
learn that in the future the mail
from ; Matamoros brought across
heretofore in the morning will
not be brought across until late in
the afternoon in order that the
people of Matamoros may have an
opportunity to answer correspond-
ence on this side. We understand
that this arrangement is not very
satisfactory to our people as they
will not be able to answer corres-
pondence from Mexico until the
day after its receipt. The only
feasible way out of the difficulty
that appears to us would be for
our citizens to petition the post
master of Matamoros to . give us
two mails daily. This could be
done very easily and it would cer-
tainly be a great accommodation
to us. Let us get to work-on the
matter for it is of importance
and foi the good of our town.
P. H. Vasey newly in the real
estate Business in a conversation
with him this morning told a
Herald man that he put in yes
terday showing Lee Hanline a
prospector of Cameron- Mo. the
Buena Vista and serveral other
farms lying close to town. Mr.
Hanline left for his home this
morning and with him he carried
samples of everything in the way
of fruits truck and vegetables
that he and Vasey could find yes
terday. Vasey says that realizing
where Hanline lived arid the
peculiar characteristics of the peo-
ple of Missouri he thought about
the best thing he could do would
be to send them the real things
that they might see them. Mr.
Hanline is a real estate man and
does a big business at home but
he will return here on the ninth of
November and do some investing
in our country.
With the filing of the applica
tion for a charter for lights and
waterworks for our town which
was mailed Saturday and will be
received by the secretary of state
today was completed the prelimi-
nary work and we imagine about
nine-tenths of the whole work.
Our people have been needing
these utilities for fifty years and
have been doing without them.
At last they have awoke to a reali-
zation of affairs and have had the
courage and intelligence and pa-
triotism to come bravely to the
front and take these matters in
hand they have put up their
money for the good of their town
and every man woman and child
iving in it and in the surrounding
country and no one can be heard
to say the citizens of this town are
ackiug in public spirit. The peo
ple are proud of themselves and
from this instance of public spirit
and liberality will draw inspiration
and hope for other things for the
common weal and the conrage to
get them.
