She could not help but wonder, one dark day,
Caught in the dull routine of broom and dish,
Wiping the baby’s face, fixing the tray
For one abed and ill, if she could wish,
Would she exchange each long and thankless task
Of patching pants and scouring pots and pans
For other work? What would one ask
Instead of washing grubby little hands?
The days skipped by too, filled with baking pies;
To read much more than children’s dog-eared books.
Her only music now was lullabies—
She had too little time to tend her looks.
How close these four walls hemmed her hours in!
The world went by so wide, and all she had

Was here spent with this man, the toothless grin
Of one small girl child, and one star-eyed lad.
As she stood there, dish mop in hand, she knew
That she would choose again this role as wife
And mother of these small blond treasures too.
These walls enclosed her heart as well as life.
Now on to the continuation of Vera’s story. Last week the story states
that she had started to work for Dr. Thomas and they were to see if they
could work together.
Neither of them ever got to answer that question, for those two went to
work and worked long hours, sometimes all day and all night, for at that time
it was working with clinic patients and a few bed patients. They even went
into homes to deliver a few babies, even though they had a nice delivery
room at the clinic, some people did not have money for that. The doctor
made house calls, day and night and today that would be an insult to doctors
of today. Appointments were made, but if an emergency or perhaps not an
emergency, people came in late and wanted to see the doctor, Dr. Thomas
nor Vera would never turn them away. On weekends you could see Vera
going to the clinic and sometimes to patients’ homes, but by her attitude the
patients knew she was glad to help them.
Even though Vera worked long hours, she felt very lucky at the chances
of learning. When Dr. Thomas put in a new X-ray machine, the company
sent a man down to teach her how to make X-rays Also she learned the EKG
machine, so she could have a test made in a short time for Dr. Thomas. And
there were other machines for therapy that they taught her to use. All of this
teaching was free to her. The head man in the lab at Cleburne hospital came
after hours to do the blood work for Dr. Thomas and he, too, asked Vera if
she would like to take lessons in blood work and she was glad to also learn
this work.
Vera says it wasn’t all sad, or hard work and at times there was time for

I have before me a religious tract with these words star-
ing up at me. “Faith, plus nothing and minus nothing, is the
way of salvation. Man has eternal life the minute he
believes.” Millions of people both believe and teach that
one is saved the moment he believes. The Bible teaches no
such doctrine! Please observe the following scriptures:
Faith without works is dead. “But wilt thou know, O
vain man, that faith without works is dead!” (James 2:20)
Faith alone is dead. “Even so faith, if it hath not works,
is dead being alone.” (James 2:17)
Faith without love will not profit. “Though I have faith,
so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I
am nothing.” (I Corinthians 13:2)
Faith without works is like the body without the
Spirit. “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith
without works is dead also.” (James 2:26)
Faith only would have saved the devils. “Thou
believest that there is one God, thou doest well: the devils
also believe, and tremble.” (James 2:19)
Faith only would have saved the cowardly rulers.
“Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed
on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess
him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; For they
loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.” (John
12:42-43)
Faith must work to avail. “For in Jesus Christ neither
circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but
faith which worketh by love.” (Gal. 5:6) “He that believeth
on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son
shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
(John 3:36) Faith and obedience go together. My friend,
one does not have eternal life the minute he believes! Faith
must move us to obey the Lord. Obedient Faith Saves.

Before I start the column this week and continue the story and life of
Vera Carter, I must make an apology to all Mothers, for last week, Sunday,
May 12 was Mother’s Day. I have always tried to put a tribute to Mothers on
that occasion and I did not even mention the day. But it is not too late to
make amends. I truly wanted to insert this poem that I found sometime back
and I was saving it for the week of Mother’s Day. So if you will please, take
the thoughts of this poem to wish you a belated Happy Mother’s Day. The
title of the poem is Choice by M.J. Post. I hope that you like it as much as I
do.
