mule deer, golden eagles, black bear
and mountain lions that make wildlife
an integral part of the Canyonlands
experience. On the Colorado River
you see the evolutionary age and his-
tory of this desert and its inhabitants
up close.'
While world-class whitewater raft-
ing is the primary activity here,
Canyonlands also presents amazing
climbing, rappelling, desert backpack-
ing, canyoneering and mountain bik-
ing terrain for beginners and experts
alike. The terrain here is challenging,
but provides enough activity options
for the entire family to gain a true
sense of adventure while having won-
derful fun.
After you spend time in this desert
paradise, you gain an immense amount
of respect and awe for the river’s
heritage. You feel a larger sense of
purpose, a greater connection with
nature, a larger view of the world, all
its beauties and your role in it.
Strength, courage, compassion and a
heightened sense of adventure all ac-
company you home from the Colorado
River.
This Outward Bound Adventure Se-
ries moment is brought to you by
Colorado Outward Bound School,
whose summer whitewater rafting and

You’re staring straight into the mid-
dle of Satan’s Gut, a Colorado River
rapid big enough to make your 18-foot
boat feel like a pair of water wings.
You yell, “Right turn, paddle hard,”
take a quick glance at your boat mate
ahead, get the rhythm and paddle with
everything you’ve got, adrenaline
pumping. “Back paddle!” is the next
command as a wave sends the front of
the craft straight up and you look
down to see the “hole” passing just a
foot or two away, ready to feel the
experience of being a rag in a Maytag.
But, you get through it, hitting the
eddy on the other side, soaked and
laughing, ready to take on the next
rapid of the “Big Drops I, II & III.”
The Colorado River in the heart of
Canyonlands National Park, Utah
lives and breathes excitement. Below
its confluence with the Green River,
the Colorado becomes one of the
swiftest rivers on the continent, with
twenty-five exciting rapids that rate
with those of the Grand Canyon in
power and difficulty, including the
famous Mile Long Series, Capsize and
Big Drops. Cataract Canyon’s big wa-
ter runs a lengthy 100-mile course:
Canyonlands is full of surprises; you
never know what’s around the next
bend along the gigantic red sandstone
cliffs of the Colorado River. The
fortressed layers of the canyon walls
are jammed with millions* of years of
evolutionary formation: the Dakota,
with solid walls of riverbed stones; the
purple Morrison layer, created when
the dinosaurs roamed the earth; and
the thin band of uranium that coats the
Morrison bed. Everything here is
fascinating, from the Desert Varnish,
produced as algae, fungus and air
combined to turn soft sandstone into
solid, black, hard rock, to the Great
Basin desert outside the walls of the
cliff, full of thriving juniper and cot-
tonwood trees. From the many cliff
dwellings and petroglyph panels of the
ancient Indians that sit, frozen in time,
along the riverbank, to the coyotes,
