A lot of the brush is opportunistic, thriving in the drought. Maybe I
could propitiate the rain gods by vowing to let the housework slide: “I’ll i
work inside only when it’s raining and otherwise just keep pecking away at
(Right. According to the long range forecasts, we’ll be eating out of the
soap dish and ashtrays long before it rains enough so I can stay inside and
wash dishes. The brush will be gone though.)
I decided to tackle one little area of brush out beside Pardner’s “might
be handy someday” material storage (a.k.a. The Junk Yard). I took an inven-
tory. In a space about 10 by 16 feet there was enough agarito to supply a
whole tribe of ethnobotanists with yellow dye, lots of prickly pear, several
bushy tasajillo (pencil cactus) plants, and four eight-foot-tall lime prickly
ash trees. The brush concealed a rusted waterwell pressure tank and a som-
nolent rattlesnake. The pressure tank was destined to become a water trough
and the snake’s fate was to be dead. Soon, very soon.
Pardner kindly dispatched my snake (in strict compliance, of course,
with the edicts issued by PETRR - People for the Ethical Treatment of
Reptiles and Rodents). After I got my breathing back under control from the
surprise of finding the snake, I chopped my way into my miniature arid jun-
gle, a yuppie xeriscaper’s dream of thriving, useless plants.
Armed with a bow saw, my detested bolt cutters, hay fork and grubbing
hoe, I found that the mindless, repetitive work cleared and composed my
mind, even as my hands blistered and my muscles screamed and throbbed
their way back into condition.
Clearing brush may not improve this place much, but it is very good for
me, both body and mind.

J Getting in Shape
It seems like every winter I get just a little further out of shape, flabbier
and softer, and it is a longer and harder process every spring to get back to
some approximation of normal physical condition (which isn’t to say “nor-
mal” is much of an improvement). Those “granny handles” on the underside
| of my upper arms have permanently replaced my triceps.
I am philosophically opposed to pointless exercise just for exercise’s
I sake. Walking — just to get to the halfway point so I can turn around and

Try faux-finishing the fence
and gate by using a light solid
color base with a contrasting
darker shade blotted on top. Or,
stencil shapes, lettering or land-
scapes on your gate. Repetitive
patterns, such as checkerboard
or polka dots, are another great
idea to add a zip of color to your
backyard. This gate was made
with six different shades of Semi-
Transparent and Solid Color Stain
from The Flood Company.
Solid color and semi-transpar-
ent stains are ideal when employ-
ing these techniques, and are long-
lasting on outdoor applications. -
Flood Solid Color Deck & Siding
Stain is guaranteed against peel-
ing for 15 years and Flood Semi-
Transparent Deck & Siding Stain
is guaranteed against peeling and
fading for 5 years.
For more information on solid
color or semi-transparent stains, or

pany, 1-800-321-3444 or visit their

clejust to give my backside a ride. For the last two or three Januarys, I’ve
guilted myself into trying to do some simple exercises with free weights. So
far, my personal best on that resolution has been to keep up the program for
ten days before I lapse into sloth and winter inactivity.
About the same time I realized how out of shape my body was, I strolled
around the perimeter of our house and barns and discovered that this place
too was going to ruin. Not a soft and flabby wreck, but a thriving, growing,
thorny one. We were being overgrown by brush. Again.
Right then I decided that my need to get back into shape coincided nice-
ly with the brush-clearing imperative. If only I would spend an hour a day
on the brush, why, in just five or six years the couple acres around the house
might actually look decent.
