Jesus once told a parable about a King who prepared a great ban-
quet. It was to be a special evening - the celebration of the wedding
of his son. Food had been cooked, the banquet hall readied, table
set. The guest list had been drawn up and invitations sent out.
Things, however, did not turn out quite like the King intended.
There are many lessons we can learn from this parable. It reminds
us how gracious, and generous our King is. It portrays a God who
is always throwing a party. His invitation goes out to everyone - not
just the great, but the lowly. He invites successes and failures, great
and small - all are urged to come to the feast.
Those who accept that invitation are freely ushered into the ban-
quet. God does not stand at the door with a moral litmus test to
determine who is and who is not worthy to enter. The raggediest of
us, the most filthy and failed are gladly received. There at the door,
we are allowed to take off our filthy rags, and put on new clothes we
did not earn and do not deserve.
But how many people hear the kings invitation and decide to
pass? They are too busy, self-sufficient and self-satisfied. Now, as
then, many make their excuses and refuse to attend. What a surprise
it will be for them to learn the king takes, their rejection personally,
that their refusal of grace today may mean the absence of grace
tomorrow. (Who, by the way, is most in danger of refusing God?
The worldly and irreligious? Or the fine, upstanding religious folks,
who have achieved such a high level of clean living, they no longer
feel the need for God’s clothing or God’s banquet?)
And how many people hear the kings invitation, come to the feast,
but think they can getaway with eating at God’s table in their old.
filthy clothes? When, at the door, they are offered new garments -
they refuse! “I was invited to the party in this condition and I see no
need to change now!” So there they sit in the presence of God -
proud, stubborn, unchanged and unmoved by God’s mercies.
What a surprise it will be for those folks whom the king takes their
old clothes personally and demands to know how they could dis-
honor him by hanging on to a life that is not appropriate for this
great occasion.

I watch you as you rush through your life, worrying
about this and that. Why can’t you place more trust in
me? As my son, Jesus, told you, “Look at the birds in the
fields. They neither reap nor sow. Yet my father takes
care of them.” Learn to put your faith and trust in me.
Though you may feel I’m not listening when you pray, I
hear you. I answer all your prayers. It may not be the
answer you seek, but it is what I know is best for you.
Even when things look their darkest, you can turn to me.
I will always be there for you. When my son was dying
on the cross, he called out, “My God, my God! Why
have you forsaken me?”. But I hadn’t forsaken him. His
destiny was to free you from sin by his crucifixion.
When he rose from the dead, glorious and triumphant, he
showed the world my plan for you. Remember, I’m
always listening.
