We’re allowed to cuss and dress like freaks
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks.
They’ve outlawed guns, but first the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
Now I sit me down in school,
Where praying is against the rule.
For This great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a federal matter now.

For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all.
In silence alone we must meditate.
God’s name is prohibited by the State.
It’s scary here, I must confess.
When chaos reigns the school’s a mess.
So Lord, this silent plea I make—
Should I be shot
My soul please take.

The power to simplify
in last week s Letter1 to the
Editor. I read the words "Democratic
rhetoric". Mr. Peck gives us a con-
servative view that I find interesting,
whether I agree with him or not.
When Ms. Blake dared to share her
more liberal views it was denounced
as Democratic rhetoric. Daring to
have a different opinion and express-
ing it does not denote partisan
rhetoric. Let's save that label for

Remember the Ryan Hurt family, they lost part of their house in a
fire this last Saturday. It did not take all of it, but any fire at this time of year
with all the drought is very scary. So please remember them and ask if they
need help in anyway. .
Our family lost a cousin this last week. Many in this area might
remember him or his mother and daddy. Otto Jean, Jr. passed from this life
on Wednesday of last week. He was raised in Covington,Texas and finsihed
school there be fore joning the Air-Force and making a career of this. He
was gone for many years, but returned and made his home and work around
Alvarado and Burleson, where two of his sisters lived. He was living in
Whitney, after his retirement. He was the son of Otto and Viva Yates Jean.
His service was on Friday at Burleson, with burial in the National Cemetery.
Jerry and Betty Willis traveled by air to Las Vega, Neveda this last
Sunday and returned on Thursday. While they were there they saw three dif-
ferent apparel shows. They saw other shows of the city, the dueling ships at
Treasure Island, the light show at the Mirage, the volcano and the white
tiger show by Sigmund and Roy. They enjoyed the trip and getting away
from their fast paced life of business and work .
Remember the Homecoming and the Class reunion parties that are
being planned. All of this begins the week of September 22nd and 23rd. At
the football game on Friday night, the 22nd, the Ex-students Association
will have a table set up. Refreshments will served in the high school cafte-
ria. The classes of 47-48-49 are planning their get-together for the 23rd at
the Band Hall. Everyone is invited to this that would like to attend.
News is short this week. The weather is hot and hotter and very
dry as we all know. Even my grandkids are wishing for the long neck bird
that is supposed to be a sign of rain. (And we actually did see one last week)
Our neighbor has not lost faith that it will rain. He has had a huge pond built
on his place of last week. And if it rains enough to fill that gigantic hole we
will all be very happy. A small shower did strike the ground on Saturday of
last week. We were in Maypearl at relatives house and it rained very hard
for a period of time, but the closer we got to home very little moisture had
fallen. When we first moved out here on this hill in the country, it rained
contiunally for years and even had seven to eleven inches of rain in a day.
The bottom of the hill would be covered with water and rushing over the
road deeply. Just remembering those days brings me hope of rain to come.
So lets all pray for rain and when it comes be blessed by it and thankful.
Labor Day was quiet around our place, but out on the Interstate
cars were rushing madly to destinations. A trash truck caught on fire and
stopped traffic for a long time. Those poor people that were behind it were
suffering terrible. We saw cars and trucks with hoods up, evidently got too
hot, waiting to be on their way. We hoped to see a policemen to come to
reroute traffic on to the service road, but as we passed by on the service
road no one was in sight and the traffic was stalled for many miles back.
Happy birthday to these ones: on the 7th to Margaret Bentz,
Charles Neff, Anne Beard, of Abilene,. J.J. Johnson, Kathy Roden, Brady
Dietert of Kerrville; on the 8th to Robert Knoles, Evelyn Kafer, A.J.

Ellis, Curtis Laird; on the 11th to Oleta Lubke; on the 12th to Joshua
Hughes, Meghan Ray, Kelbie Goodman of Ingram, Tx..

the 11th, married in 1970; to Bobby and Betty Halbert, on the 12th,married
in 1948.

Real religion is a way of life, not a white cloak to be wrapped
around us on Sunday and then cast aside into the 6-day closet of unconcern. • • •
Think about that one for awhile.
I hope that you all have a safe and happy week!! Please let the
Grace of God become a part of your life.

I wish I knew the author of this poem, the person needs to be con- L
gratulated for his or hers intelligence and truthfullness. The words of this
poem ring so sadly true of the schools of today. May we all think on these <
thoughts and pray for a better world for our future citizens.
As a Grandview graduate, I am very proud of my edu-
cation. A man is what his education makes him. I know
that there are some people that are worth millions that
only have a third grade education. This is very rare, as
most of you know. Most people have to lie in the bed that
their education makes for them. We are very fortunate
that our school here in Grandview, is very academic
minded. Grandview ISD has always been known for its
high level of academic talent as well as the sports talent.
We have achieved this greatness by hiring top-notch
teachers that have surpassed the standards set by the
State of Texas Education Agency. One of Grandview
finest teachers is Mr. Phillip Galyon. Phillip is a science
teacher and also the head boys basketball coach. Only a
handful of teachers at Grandview have master’s degrees.
Mr. Galyon being one of them. Phillip received his
Bachelor of Science and his Master of Science at the
University of Oklahoma. While watching from the stands,
I can tell that Phillip not only teaches the kids the funda-
mentals of the game but also the fundamentals of friend-
ship, teamwork, and dedication.
Just as our community supports our children, we must
support our quality teachers like Phillip Galyon.
Grandview thank you--This week’s thank you goes to
Calvin Warren. Calvin has been a major part of this com-
munity for several years. He works at Grandview ISD.
Calvin has kept the buses in safe working order so that
our children are safe. Calvin drives a route and is very
safety minded with our children. Calvin also keeps our
school looking great and is part of the reason Grandview
Schools outshine the other surrounding schools. People
like Calvin Warren are what makes Grandview so
GRAND.
