Heart-felt Religion
Today there ,is a great emphasis on “heart-felt religion.” Many
people rest their assurance of salvation on how they feel. Therefore
it is vital that we know what the Bible heart is.
. In the New Testament the heart stands for the entire inner life, the
capacity of a person to feel, think, and resolve, with emphasis on
thinking and willing.
In the heart, sin is committed (Matthew 5:28).
In the heart forgiveness is granted (Matthew .1 8:35).
In the heart condemnation is felt (I John 3:20).
In the heart thought is formed (Mark 7:21; Luke 2:19).
In the heart speech is born (Matthew 12:34-37).
In the heart obedience is given (Romans 6:17).
In the heart you will find: doubt (Mark 11:23); decision (2
Corinthians 9:7); deception (James 1:26); belief (Romans 10:9);
sorrow (John 16:6); illumination (2 Corinthians 4:6); and assur-
ance (I John 3:19).
In light of all these passages it is no wonder that the lexicogra-
pher F. Wilbur Gingrich defines the Greek word for heart “mainly as
the center and source of the whole inner life.”
Members of the Lord’s church walk by faith and not by fleshly
feeling (2 Corinthians 5:7). True heart-felt faith come’s from
hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Our heart is attuned to
God’s Word. Our feelings are the result of our faith, and not our faith
the result of our feelings. Christians believe in heart-felt religion the
way the Bible teaches it.

“O Come, O Come Emmanuel” says the song at
Christmas time. We Christians understand that the baby
Jesus was the God of all creation living in a body like
our own. And, the Jews of long ago were waiting for
God to be with them (“God with us” is what Emmanuel
means).
It had been a long time since they had felt that God
had given them a sign of hope. So, they, were calling
on God to be with them. They wanted a sign of God’s
presence. But, God seemed to be silent.
I remember waiting at a hospital one time for news
about a loved one. The auto wreck could have been
avoided if I had been a little more careful. I was wish-
ing that God could be there with me. God was there, but
I wanted God to just gather me up and tell me it was
going to be OK. Instead, God offered to carry some of
the fear and guilt I was carrying.
Those ancient folks thought that God’s arrival was
going to destroy the oppressive Roman rule. He did
not, but instead he told them to love their enemies.
They were sure that Emmanuel would set up a power-
ful government that would give them places of honor.
Instead He told them not to seek places of honor, but to
serve others.
“O Come, O Come Emmanuel” says the song at
Christmas time. And, I pray that God will be with you
this Christmas. It is my belief that if God is with you
this year, you may not get a gift, but you will learn to
love your enemies and you will learn humility. God’s
presence changes us. That night in Bethlehem Mary
and Joseph, the shepherds and the kings all became ser-
vants of the most high.
What about you and I will we serve God’s children?
See you in church on Sunday!

It’s Me - God W
by Nancy Cooper
P'V
You’ve often heard it said, “Children are a gift from
God.” That couldn’t be more true, especially concerning
My Son, Jesus. Mary, the woman I chose to give Jesus life,
was merely a teenager when she was told she would bear a
son. She was engaged to a good man, Joseph, but not yet
married. It was a tremendous test of faith for both of them
to accept what would happen - yet they did.
The circumstances of that miraculous birth are well
• known. Mary and Joseph set out for Bethlehem to take part
in a census decreed by the Roman Empire. At inn after inn,
the very pregnant Mary and her husband were turned away.
Finally, they were allowed to spend the night in a stable. It
was there that My Son came into the world.
His birth was My greatest gift to you. Jesus came into
the world to continue the revelation begun when I first
spoke to Abraham. It was Jesus’ death on the cross which
enabled you to achieve eternal life. He died for man’s sins.
At this special time of year, think of this gift you’ve
received from Me. Give praise and thanks!
