ST. L. B. & M. SLEEPERS
Through Scrvivc by Yoakum Lines With
Observation Platform.
Houston Tex. Dec. 11. It is
learned that the two Yoakum roads
ob which service is to commence
at an early date in January will
use a combination sleeper and ob-
servation car on the Gulf Coast
line and the Trinity & Brazos
Valley route. The runs will be
between Brownsville and St. Louis
using the two roads mentioned
and the northern connections of
the Yoakum roads the Frisco-
Slock Island systems. A twelve-
section sleeper with observation
facilities on the rear portion will
?e the type of car used and prob-
ably half a dozen of them will be
used. An order for this number
has alread been placed with the
Pullman people who have promised
that the cars shall be ready shortly
following the commencement of
passenger traffic duringjanuary.
As explained by officials of the
road the observation feature is to
be introduced solely in order that
;patrons of ' the road may see for
tfiemselves the beautiful agricul-
tural country through which the
two roads run. The idea will be
"to advertise the sections as much
as possible and to this end the
company -wishes to afford every
facility for the Country to be
viewed by passengers. The added
advantages of an observation
feature combined with sleeper
facilities is apparent to all in-
asmuch as it combines two practi-
cal utilities. Also it ooviates the
necessity for the railroad company
to haul dead tonnage during the
sight as would be the case were
the car solely an observation car.
Manager Jeff Miller is credited
with having first advocated using
the combination sleeper and ob-
servation car on the Yoakum Tex-
as lines although many other lines
.in Texas are now using them to
decided advantage.

CATHOLICS ARE PERSECUTED.
Attitude of French Government in Ec
clesiastical Controversy v. Decried dy
Local Clergyman.
San Antonio Dec. 13-. Father
A. P. Fletcher of St. Mary's Col
lege discussed atlengtr yesterday
the condition of Catholic affairs in
France and the effect that the pres-
ent trouble would probably have
on the Catholic religion in France.
It is the opinion of Father
Fletcher that in the end the church
will be stronger than ever and that
the Government's attempt to drive
the religion from the Republic
which he says is the object of the
present persecution will result in
failure and that as in Germany
the church will prosper doubly
after matters are adjusted.
"The disefctches from France
give only one side of the affair"
said Father Fletcher "and they
falsely inform us that the Pope is
trying to interfere with the Gov
ernment when he is only seeking
fair treatment of the Catholics
which is not being accorded them.
"The present trot ble growing
out of the decree of separation of
the church and State shows plain
ly that the .French Government is
trying to subordinate the church
to the State and drive its worship
ers beyond the borders of the Re-
public." Father Fletcher says that when
the Government representatives is-
sued a decree of separation of
church and State without consult-
ing Rome they were violating the
treaty of Napoleon made some-
time in the early part of the nine-
teenth century.
"When Napoleon was in pow-
er" said Father Fletcher "they
began to persecute the Catholics in
France. Napoleon called a con
ference of representatives of the
Catholic religion in Rome and rep-
resentatives of the persecutors in
France. The conference resulted
in a treaty Detween tne two iuu-
tions in which it was agreed that-
the French Government should
take no' action against the Cath
olics without first consulting Rome.
This the late French Assembly
failed to do."
Discussing the future of Cath
olicism in France Father Fletcher
said: "Years ago Germany at-
tempted to subjugate the Catholic
Church and for awhile there were
shameful persecutions and great
confusion but in the end the
church triumphed as a Christian
Church always will. Before the
persecution the church had to
comply with certain laws of State
but afterward when it was left to
work out its own destiny without
restrictions it began to prosper
until now Catholicism in Germany
is in a freer ana more prosperous
state than in any other nation of
the world. When present con
ditions in France are relieved the
church in that nation will prosper
just as it has in Germany.
